M1009 Engine Oil

Has anyone tried the Rotella 5w/40 synthetic oil in the 6.2 J engine?I have a M1009 and though it starts fine it seems like the lighter weight oil would be better for the cold NE starts.

I have never used 5-40 other in my dmax in the winter. That oil is made for turbo diesels. Im my CUCV's I would run 15-40 in the winter and 30W in the summer. You can run a 10W-30 in the winter if you wish but if you do check the oil offten.

The military Lube Order specifies 15W40. I'm sure there may be better brands out there, but I use Rotella due to its widespread availability at truckstops and convenience stores. I run it all 4 seasons and haven't ever had a need to use anything else. Truck starts reliably at -10 to 100*F.

Amsoil 15w40, synthetic flow at colder temps and better protection at higher engine temps durning the summer.
Of course I'm a dealer and do have a biased opinion:-D.

I run Amsoil in my Cummings TD, wifes minivan, 92 Toyota 4x4 pickup, m1009 etc. And I have noticed an improvment in not only cold weather starting (it cranks faster the conventional oil) but an increase in mileage.

It is more expensive per quart/gallon but the extended drain times and mileage increase is a good payback.

I have a question ive been meaning to ask,

What is the differnence between synthetic, and Non-synthetic?
Standard petrolumn oil comes from the ground and are refined into oils, fuel, greases etc. They also don't have any waxes in them like a petrolumn base stock does.

Synthetic oils are made up of mostly man made products, they allow for better flow in cold weather are more resistant to heat and they are not effected by the acids in the by product of burning diesel.

Regular Rotella 15w40 in both of mine. Dad uses it (several 5-gallon buckets at a time) in his motorhome's Cummins diesel. Works, works, works, and works more.

If my trucks didn't both leak so much I'd consider a synthetic.

IMHO I would use the Rotella T 15W40 synthetic blend. I think that may be what you are referring to. But IMHO full synthetic is not needed in these old engines and can help avoid any seal failures/leaks. Your results may vary. Have a great day and Good Luck with your maintenance.

Any modern diesel 15W-40 oil will work and yes.. I love using Mobil delvac 15W-40 never had any issues in my durmax's and 3 military vehicles.

I use Shell rimula r4 15w40 x in my Army 6.2 NA and tomorrow I´m gonna put it into my "new" 1998 6.5 TD (has unknown sort of 15w40 in it said the previous owner) Both trucks start fine even in -20°C weather on the first attempt. I dont recommend using 10w or even 5w oils. make sure the oil is rated for trucks/tractors/construction equipment/HD and change it regularly. If the truck has problems on cold starts you should take a look at the glowing system, the fuel and air filter and make sure you have correct fuel pressure and cylinder compression.

yes you can use 5w40. Everything Except$ is better than 15w40.
These days 5w40 is also seriously cheap due to low WTI. I recommend 5w40

the oil which is supposed to be for turbo is not special except Good flow at low temp. 5w40 is much more easier to start
