It was twenty years ago today
CUCVRUS put the M1009 away
They've been going in and out of the barn
But its guaranteed to raise a smile
So may I introduce to you
Kampfwagen M1009

Today was a long day. I did manage to get motivated and get a lot of clean up and work done.
I now have electric in my barn so I can use power tools and not worry about flipping breakers and blowing fuses.
I have these tie downs from GM vans. P1000503.JPG I have many of them and they are very tough when bolted down with an M10 bolt.
I was very motivated all day I made great progress. I am moving the M1009 into the center of the shop and am going to drop all the suspension out of it so I can put a 6" lift kit on it and some 44" Monster Mudders. Yea right.
No I ordered all 4 new leaf springs and am going to replace them. I liked the ride height and firmness of the last M1009 I built and this M1009 deserves the same upgrade. Just setting on the springs for the past 36 years has taken its toll. I also removed the Red hood and have the original hood for this M1009. In near perfect condition. P1000504.JPGP1000505.JPGP1000506.JPGP1000507.JPG I placed jack stands under the frame and left the suspension hang. I removed all 4 wheels and tires and placed them in the center bay for destruction of the tires and will get the wheels sand blasted and prime coated. P1000509.JPGP1000510.JPG I ordered the 4 new springs from Stanley Springs in Harrisburg PA. The springs are US built by Dayton truck parts and they had them in stock. I have not worked on this M1009 for many years but I always ran it and drove it around the field and driveway. I did add the factory quad shock to this M1009. P1000511.JPGP1000508.JPGAnd it has a brand new GM crate rear differential. It never even wore the primer from the brake shoes. The front differential was a crated rebuilt axle assembly. I removed the differentials to use in other M1009's that I was working on. No one ever wanted to pay anything for the new axles so I used the used axles and put the new ones in my M1009. Why NOT. When I said I wanted $800. for a new rear they thought I was crazy. I spent $1700. getting a 2015 2500 Silverado rear rebuilt. It got knocked out in a snow storm a few years back. P1000512.JPG Have a Great Day. I know this post will make someone smile. I am on it. Now I need to get an electric heater for the barn.

This m1009 is very clean. I parked it in the barn in the md 90's and have marveled at it ever since. Shame is I should have left it the way it was and not fixed the damaged 1/4 panels. i do NOT like the antenna brackets they did a lot of body damage to many CUCV's. The rear antenna brackets are the worse ones. These had the 1/4's torn and the nuts welded to the sheet metal. I screamed when I seen the work. Then they drilled thru the inner bed panel and ran extra long bolts thru both ply. The Horror.
I took some photos of the core supportP1000515.JPGP1000516.JPG and the under side at the areas that most are all rotted out. P1000513.JPGP1000514.JPG The stock engine. P1000517.JPG. I will post more later as progress happens. i want to find a flameless heater that blows heat at me while I work. I have 220 in the barn now.

FERTAN - Rust Removal Solution - Now available in USA (fertanusa.com)
Sezzo do tell about this product. What is the first thing I need to do without a lot of reading? I can follow instructions better and don't want to make mistakes. I want to get working on the interior floors. I want to get them properly prepped and ready for Line X. Color Choices (Xtra) | LINE-X
Today I have a lot of wood to split.DSCF6496.JPG I want to get working on the M1009. I am looking for a nice electric heater for my barn. One with a fan. 220 volt preferred. Anyone have any ideas? Time to venture out for coffee and watch the sun rise for another day of fun in the sun. My Wife tells me I am always a busy beaver. She is going to put signs up on my barn door. beaver.jpg Have a Great day and Be Safe. Happy Holidays.

I always use Fertan as rust converter but you need to know the process of how to apply it.
Here is a short and simple video by the producer that should help.

And here is a link to the rust converter:

Most important thing is to remove the loose rust the best you can with an angle grinder, sandpaper and metal brushes (I use the ones you can use with a cordless screwdriver). Clean the surface after that very thoroughly with air pressure, silicon remover and at last with a little bit of clean water. Now you should apply Fertan when the surface is still a little wet. Wait for about 24 hours (or longer - depends on the temperature, in cold weather up to 48 hours) and clean the now black and converted surface with a clean and soft sponge. But don't scratch or damage it by cleaning. Just be gentle. When the surface has dried it is ready for primer (for example: https://fertanusa.com/products/fertan-epoxy-premier-spray/). The best way to apply the rust converter is to brush it on the surface. That way you can get to every corner very easily.

Does that description help?

The Line-X color can be customized I think. The standard black color looks a little bit too glossy and shiny for a CUCV. It does not match the flat CARC paint. FS 34031 Helo Drab should be a better choice. It is a dark grey. The US Army AH-64 Kampfhubschrauber is painted in Helo Drab (https://www.flugzeuglexikon.com/ILA...e Guardian/Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardian.html). As a Line-X this color won't be as flat as it should be but a shiny grey is better than a shiny black. Maybe Line-X has an option for flat colors? That would be awesome. But I don't think so.

Happy holidays. Take care.

Rick, why an electric heater? In your barn, I would figure a decent propane salamander heater for the application. 80,000 BTU should keep you toasty. Electric will run all day long without the tank refill and Home Depot does sell them, as do other hardware stores.

If I had one laying around, I'd just let you have it. There are a few "fairly" near you on craigslist. This one may do the trick, but I don't know how powerful it is.

Happy Hunting and Red looks awesome. Following closey.

Live and learn. Do NOT reuse U bolts. I did many times but decided to check on this today. Glad I did. Most times I just burn them off and get new ones. Little Red has new ones and I am just going to toss them and replace them. They are not worth any issues. Just replace them. I got in many arguments with people over the years about this. These are the same guys that will replace an oil pump when the rear main seal or oil pan gasket is leaking. Remember that lesson also. Oil pumps do NOT create oil pressure. If I have a leaking seal I replace the seal. If the oil pump is bad I would probably have more issues than just a bad oil pump. Make sense? Take Care and Be Safe.

I spent a good part of my weekend off task. Sometimes that happens. I did promise an progress report. And I would be untruthful if I said I had a struggle to reach my goal on the CUCV M1009. I removed the front and rear spring on the right side only. P1000522.JPGP1000523.JPGI could have used a hand ratchet. P1000526.JPGEverything was like brand new. I had installed Energy suspension bushings on everything 20 years ago and the clamping plates and the front brake backing plates and brackets were all powder coated 20 years ago.P1000524.JPGP1000525.JPG P1000530.JPGP1000531.JPGThey are dusty and that is fine. It is not going to a museum. I hope it splashes thru some mud holes and gets used to work. That is what I am building a utility vehicle. The front frame bushings are still brand new.P1000528.JPG front spring out and the top plate. I had the inner fender aprons powder coated also. P1000529.JPG I have a nice set of springs with new bushings. They are used and the M1009 has set on them for 37 years. P1000532.JPG I will be picking up the 4 new stock leaf springs next Monday. Happy Holidays. I will keep the progress coming. I still am waiting for heat in the barn. Maybe this week.

I have the new old U bolts removed so I can have new ones made while I am at the spring shop. I need 4 the same for the back axle, 3 the same for the front axle and the one odd ball for the right inner housing to plate. I feel very wasteful throwing these away but they will be recycled. Does anyone need a nice set of stock leaf springs with good bushings? They are 37 years old but as good as new. Rick, this is gonna be a "build in a barn" masterpiece Kampfwagen. So happy to see some progress. Thank you.

I have heat in the barn. P1000542.JPG Today was my goal to go get the 4 new leaf springs. Goal met. I was able to work a full day and get to the spring shop before 4PM. P1000538.JPG All new U-bolts washer and nuts. P1000539.JPG Side by side comparison of old rear springs verses new. My 220 lbs. can easily compress the old. The new stay stiff. P1000540.JPG The front actually have an arch verses the reversed arch of the old ones. P1000541.JPGI know as a proven fact that replacing the OEM springs with new stock springs makes a huge difference in any vehicle. The CUCV sits higher and looks better with new springs at all 4 corners. No more sagging to the side or to the rear like most I see are doing. And no lift kit springs needed. I will be getting these springs installed over the next few days as time allows. Having some heat will make a huge difference after 30 years of no heat. WOW I even have a dusk to dawn light outside. I hired an electrician to do some upgrades to my barn electric. So much nicer than an electrical cord. Happy Holidays to all.

Where did you get the springs?? I'd assume somewhere local? Also are the dual shocks up front stock or something you added? Mine has a single shock up front. I'd prefer to replace the springs as well and won't be doing any lift kit either... I don't think it needs it really. Only have 48k on it but they are old springs.
