M1009 Shock Recommendations

I’m going to replace the shocks for my CUCV M1009. It has a 6” inch lift, not sure if that matters. I want to see what you guys recommend? Brand, Type, etc.

I looked on 4 Wheel Parts and got the phone book! I mostly drive on roads, but would like the option of something decent for any off-roading. I don’t want to spend a small fortune either.

I’m going to replace the Front Bearings as well. Is there anything else I can replace while I’m at it?

It sounds like Bilstein is the most popular choice. So what type is ideal: gas, monotube, shock absorber, etc.?

I just visited 4 Wheel Parts. I was told they don’t have Bilstein for 6”. I’m going to see if I can find those 6” shocks elsewhere.

They do have Pro Comp available for $60 each plus installation. I’m assuming those are subpar in comparison?

Just searched the Bilstein site. It doesn't look like the make a 6" lift shock for an 84 k5 blazer.

My next suggestion would have been Rancho but I don't think they make a 6 inch either. This is why I don't like lifts. Just get a name brand shock, preferably with a warranty.
Sounds good! Thank you for double checking! I’ll likely just get the Pro Comp Shocks. I’ll just have to see about their Warranty.

That looks like the same ones Bilstein has listed as being for a 2-4 inch lift. There is also one person in the Q&A section who suggested they would not have much up travel on a 4 inch lift.

I made an appointment at 4 Wheel Parts for later this week. They’ll be installing Pro Comp Shocks. $60 each, plus installation. I’m also going to have them inspect the bushing, wheel bearings, etc.

I’ll report back with photos.

I had the Pro Comp Shocks installed today. It all looks good, at least they have a decent 3 year warranty. They gave me the Pro Comp stickers to add onto the shocks, but that would ruin the covert, stealthy look!

Time will tell how they perform!!

I'm surprised they didn't include dust boots. May be personal preference but I don't like the shock ram exposed.

Dirt bikes have taught m the opposite. No boots equals clean rams provides the rod is on the bottom. Stainless steel and chrome are subject to crevice corrosion so it's best to leave them exposed and clean. Covers or anything that will retain dirt or contact surfaces will cause corrosion.

Boots aren't the best for impact protection. An open shaft with a plastic guard is the hot trend right now. Dirt bikes have been doing this since the late 1980's. The hot rod trucks such as the Raptor have adopted the same practice.

The external wipers are problematic as well. The wiper in the seal head is all that is necessary.

@cucvrus I am still learning about all of the undercarriage parts. I suspect you are correct. I’m fairly confident there are a handful of parts needing to be replaced. I’m going to take the M1009 back to 4 Wheel Parts and have them do an inspection. Or somewhere else that charges less. What exactly should be inspected?

Last year when I had the tires replaced they mentioned that the front two tires could be wiggled/moved slightly by hand. They said because the from bearings need replaced. Is that true? That might be one thing to have inspected.
