I went ahead and ordered a new MC and new wheel cylinders. Brakes are the most important part of a vehicle in my opinion. I checked the MC once again and down in the throat of the fill tube is absolutely packed almost solid with black gunk, almost certainly decomposed rubber. Who knows what someone put in the system in the past. I will flush the lines thoroughly. I plan to use DOT 5 as I purchased a large bulk supply several years ago when it was cheap.

I agree with replacing the rubber lines. If you're redoing the brake system those are an important part of the system and can cause you problems. Also the MC replacement on the A2 is way easier than the A1 as the A2 only has one bolt under the dash to pull and it pulls out to the left thus not having to get angered and frustrated with pulling the bolt that runs into the steering column. Give me an A2 MC set up any day of the week. RTFM for the correct procedure.

I purchased new rubber lines as well. The brake shoes in the back look new and the drums are perfect so nothing to worry about there. I haven't pulled the drums on the front yet but hopefully they will be in the same shape as the rear. I also haven't tested the existing brake fluid yet and hopefully it is DOT 5 because that is what I want to use. I've used DOT 5 in all of my current and previous MVs and military trailers as well as two classic British sports cars and never had a problem.
