M37 Fuel Pump Removal

All, my '62 M37B1 has been running well, but has two oil leaks after running it for awhile. I was at a historic military vehicle rally at Fort Hood last year when someone noticed oil on the ground. There were drips of oil from the bottom tip of the original fuel pump (a fuel injector/pump was installed after I bought it). The guy said it was the gasket at the bottom of the (original) fuel pump. I was still able to drive it and add oil when needed (I don't get to drive it that often).

Ok, I finally have time to work on it and tried removing all the screws from the bottom ring of the fuel pump. There is one screw next to the oil pan that is hard to get to. However, in looking at the gasket, it looks good as new.

Could the leak be coming from the oil pan, running off the bottom of the fuel pump, and dripping from there? OR, how do I remove the entire fuel pump so I can get to that last screw? I cannot figure out how to remove the fuel pump. Thanks!

The original pump was double acting, in that it both pumped fuel and the bottom half boosted vacuum, mostly for the windshield wipers. It was notorious for the vacuum part to fail, which usually contributed to an oil leak & or consumption. One line went straight to the intake manifold. Under some circumstances, this could lead to sever oil comsumption. In the Old Days, rebuild Kits were available for this pump. There was a small metal shield over the top of this pump that was important in helping to prevent vapor lock.

Ok, that sounds familiar, based on my mechanic and previous owner of my truck. My wipers barely move when I activate them. So, do I need a new fuel pump? What's the most economical way to fix this (I have some electrical problems, as well). Thanks!

Well, I don't really drive Humpty that much. Usually every time I drive him, I'll play with the wipers, but they move slowly and don't even complete a full sweep, so I have to manually move them back into the top horizontal position.

Do you think I need to replace the fuel pump? I see Midwest Military has NOS for about $170. Thoughts?

The new one will be the same as the old one. To make the wipers work, they need to be maintained and lubed. The glass needs to be smooth and the wiper blades need to be new. I find a large vacuum reservoir with a check valve works wonders. (Old Ford part. Looks like a coffee can with fittings.)

Okay, will that stop the oil leak? Also, do I need to replace the current pump? I really don't drive him that much, except for parades and such...and especially not in the rain, so I'm not too worried about the wipers.

Thanks to all who replied. I found that the problem is the lower rod seal causing the oil leak. Since I'm using a 24v electronic fuel pump, I do not need a total rebuild. I've ordered the necessary parts and they will (hopefully) be here by Friday so I can work on it Saturday. I removed the fuel pump from the engine block tonight and am cleaning/soaking it overnight. Thanks again.
