Heck yes! I have always thought I could get my hands on a suitable large truck intercooler and make one of those things run much better. That and an upgrade to a modern turbo design...

I think Craintruck did a big test on this a while back. See the thing is the intake is surrounded by coolant jackets.. kinda like its own intercooler if you will. I don't know how much that extra cooler will work. If the air is cooler then the intake, the coolant will just heat it up to "factory" opperating temp. If I remember correctly the factory set up works really well on regulating the air intake temp. I dont want to say all that work is in vane, but......

thanks for the reply about the intake being surounded by the water jacket, i tap in to the runner and took my readind before it reach the valve and there was not difrents in tempereature between the discharge air from the turbo after passing througth the intake, however in a very hot enviroment like a desert i think there will be a temperature diffrents , i should see a good temp drop because the only way to cool hot air its after the air its compress in the intercooler under boost, this engines deliver a lot off fuel under load up to about 2300 to 2400 rpm , also my has a spring waste gate which i will look at to play with in the next week or so, maybe even before i complete the intercooler.......:-D

Right, I did in fact install a thermocouple probe in the intake manifold near the #6 cylinder as far away as possible from the turbo compressor discharge. IIRC, with a boost of about 10 psi, the temp at the compressor was about 225°F and it dropped to about 210 degrees after passing through the water cooled intake manifold, which in effect, works as an intercooler, although designed to help warm the air at arctic temps.

If you place the intercooler heat exchanger in front of the radiator, you'll have issues with engine op temp IMHO...interesting project though.

:cry:thank you for the info but a 15 degree will not make ay diffrents and not sure if all run 5 tons run as cold as mind but even here in florida {empty] it will not get any hotter than 150 degrees {water temps}on the governor for 2 to 4 hours up state rd 27 as i often travel between MIAMI and ZOLFO SPRINGS, i'm looking for 100 degree difrents or more under pressure and thats where a intercooler comes in affect not to argue the facts that no matter what its a slow truck and i'm not trying to build a hotrod , how ever i'm a hobby welder and machinest and this truck is a hobby for me so i will continue to do things to it and the end i think it will look cool and from past experience working with turbo diesel engines making from 50HP to 2000HP intercooler always help .... but again its just a hobby for me is like a tonka truck..... but also keeps the truck well maintain and looking good....
