Medium towbars one fat

I have most of the components to make two of the medium towbars, one of the lunette bars is "fat", the other "normal", anybody know the story (about the fat design)?

Also, I have asked about the sleeves on the towbars and now I see them, right on the cover of the manual, talking about not seeing the trees for the forest. :)

The skinny one is like yours, Jason.
The other ends are shown here, the inner piece is also larger in dia than the "normal".

I don't have the mating piece for the fat one, but used it and a normal "non-lunette" piece for the tow of the 8x8.

My tow bar is like the "fat" one on the right. I thought it was a" Medium" tow-bar(others like it I have seen forsale were called medium). Mangus has the other one and i thought it was a "light duty" Now I am confused!

Here's a few pics of mine. Notice that only one leg has had the modification and at the lunnete end there are no modifications needed. Some pins are not original. This is what I thought was a Medium Towbar. Also the Fsn # for mine is 4910-735-6056, i think. The tech manual here on ss is TM 9-4910-496-10, I think it shows the bar i have (not sure).

Edit 12/4/06. The correrct # for my tow bar is 4910-00-433-7094

Here are some pics of the ends of my well used towbar. Also some pics of the MWO sleeves installed on the towbar. The smaller sleeves measure 2.88" OD, 2.36" ID and length of sleeve 1.5". Thickness of the material measured in only one spot was.257". The larger sleeve is 3.510" OD, 2.90" ID, overall length is 2.980". thickness is .257". Without the MWO the towbar legs can be closed together, with the MWO they can't. This is never a problem for me as I break the bar down into 2 pcs to facilitate it's movement. I can't speak intellegently as to the type of steel used in the MWO but I'm sure someone with better metallurgy training can offer up some ideas.

It was repainted by me, after i bought it from Jim Henry (who did refer to it as a Medium tow-bar).

Kenny I did not know there were sleeves meant to be added to the lunette end! I see now that yours has them.
So it restricts closing the bar together when not in use, I guess i like that mine does not have them at that end then. btw With all of the MWO ,your bar looks like it could tow a Tank! ( I know it can)


Kenny, I have been told by a few people that you also need to cut about a 1/4" off of the bar end to be able to slide the leg into it after the MWO. The one side of mine with the sleeve added has been cut a little shorter so the leg will go all the way into it and the t-pin can fit in the fully collapsed position.

I agree with doghead, Bjorn, the one on the left looks like my 'Light' towbar, and the one on the right looks like his 'Medium'. I was shocked when I found out. :) I will see if I can get a couple of pics of mine today, but they may come from the cell phone, as I think our digi cam batteries are shot.

The mesurements that Kenny shows for the sleeves will fit on my bar correcty. The outer diameter of my bar is 2.875".

Based on the above info, I have enough pieces for one light duty towbar and only the lunette part for the medium. No adapters, though.

The image below shows how the medium lunette part was used with a light duty non-lunette part.
The medium part I have has a slight bend in it.

Beautiful job on your towbar Doghead, guess it time for some paint here.

I just hit my bar with the verniers and its 2.80". The NSN on my bar is 4910-00-433-7094. Perhaps we are comparing that to the 4910-00-735-6056 bar. Here's a link to one with that supposed NSN. http://www.allwheeldriveinc.com/AWD TBAR.htm
Oddly the 7094 bar doesn't seem to appear in any TMs. The 6056 bar is covered under TM 9-4910-496-10. The other towbar manual is TM 9-4910-593-12&P and covers towbar 4910-01-365-9304. Guess I'm a little confused now that I typed this. I'm still digging!

I just did a pencil rubbing on the numbers i had noticed on the bar in between the ring and the pivot pin. These numbers are cast into it (7551081) also not 100% sure i read them correctly. I have no idea what these numbers mean. There are a few letters also but i did not pay attention to them. Bjorn, I have seen a much heavier tow bar that you may be refering to as the tb from he77.

The more I see and read the more I think that the "fat" tow bar is a newer one and the sikiny is a older one???
TM9-4910-496-10 list the wight as 165lbs max cap 42,000lbs NSN 4910-735-6056
TM9-94910-593-12 list the wight as 250lbs max cap 39,000lbs NSN 4910-01-365-9304
I also found a NSN 2540-01-267-2912 for a medium tow bar with standard foot and
NSN 2540-00-936-7801 M113 family tow bar
How many diferant tow bars are out there?????

How about 2540-01-267-2912. PN 12322663. That took some researchin! Ironically, its referred to as a medium bar as well, rated at 70 tons. Dug the NSN up from the M88 manuals.
