Hey Guys,
kind of in a bind i have an 802a up on some remote property that was running great last time I was up here about a month ago and last time I went to start it the starter just clicked as if it died and when I went to try it again I noticed K16 smoked , I went home bought a new starter and new relay , I’m up here now the new starter is in , worked great from dead crank switch but went to start it from main switch and relay just smoked and when I crank it the relay blows won’t start, I have limited tools with me but gonna see if I can dig up a tester and start testing any ideas on where to start would be great,
thank you

I’m checking but I don’t see anything and now if I connect the batteries it just cranks no matter what position the dead crank switch is in

Sounds like the starter relay welded itself shut. Once the magic smoke gets out it is impossible to get it back in. I would concentrate on wherever you saw the smoke coming from. That is definitely going to be a problem area and may give clues as to what caused it. Are the heavy grounds all clean and tight on the starter? If the main ground is loose the power will try to find and alternate route through lighter wires.

Mouse pee is, sadly, wonderfully conductive. The fact that the dead crank switch isn't functional could be a blown switch, shorted switch, or perhaps a bad starter solenoid. Probably time to clean the mouse nest area carefully, and then start tracing wires and connections. I would start at the starter.

All the best,

I'd start and the end of the line as well, and work backwards. Sounds like you have some contacts welded shut somewhere or shorted wires.
disconnect the small signal wire from the silver starter solenoid to the right of the K1 relay, ( not the glow plug solenoid right next to it ) behind the rear wall of the control cube ( assumingly where you found the nest ) if the starter still cranks on its own, that means the solenoid is welded closed.
If the cranking stops, travel further back to the cranking relay in the front of the control cube and check that for welded contacts.

Was it a mouse nest or birds nest? If it was mouse you will know instantly. Both the smell and also any metal in the vicinity will be rusted. They pee where they sleep. If it was birds it is unlikely to have been the cause of the problem. If it was Chipmunks, Well then I feel sorry for you, they just love to eat wires. They are not as dirty as mice but more destructive. Squirrels are along the lines of chipmunks. Again, they tend to keep a clean nest.
