MI Michigan insurance and registration

Hello everyone. New here, new hobby idea, and have read that this is the place to go for answers.

I've done a lot of browsing about information related to insuring and registering a m35a2 in Michigan. Id assume my answer is somewhere in older posts but I have yet to come up with it. So I'm reaching out to any other current or former michiganders with some experience going through the process. First off from what I can tell, here in Michigan no cdl is required for a m35a2 in stock configuration with 3 axles, as it doesn't break the 26,001 pound mark, and I would not be using it in a commercial capacity. At least on the Sos site it makes it seem that way. Is that correct? I've looked at some m35a2s and would be getting one with a state title already in place, just needing to get it swapped to Michigan and registered. I would be looking to drive routinely on road through the summer months say may-october. Options for registering? And obviously would need insurance, any recommendations here in Michigan? Or better places outside the state? Thanks in advance, happy to have found this community.

An idea might be to consider a local Michigan attorney. Steve Lehto had a Deuce and has several MV related videos on YouTube. My opinion is that he seems to be a heck of a guy and is willing to share information.

As a daily driver your looking at putting GVWR plates on , Historic have a bunch of restrictions.
That's the route I was planning on going. Wanting to verify that all is correct. So there should be no issues to drive under a chauffeurs license or to get it plated in Michigan?

Yep, no CDL for private use , they just want the $$$$$ for the plates.
You also are not required to display the plate it just needs to be in the truck.

Hey bud, another Michigander here...I had a Deuce about 9 years ago or so that I bought from a surplus dealer in Claire. At the time, I just put logging truck plates on it and insurance was stupid cheap, even having the stupid expensive no fault insurance MI had. I don't know of the restrictions of a logging plate but it was a one time fee if I remember. Not very expensive. I drove it all over the place from Grand Rapids to Big Rapids, Cadillac, Manistee, Walker, Kent City, and some other area's. I never had an issue with cops, no staties, locals, or DNR. It was practically a daily driver for me.
That said, glad to see another Michigander, you already have a truck or you buying one soon?

Good to know. I'm in process of buying. It's gonna be a wait that's the downside.

Logging plates have mileage restrictions like farm plates ( I think 150 miles from where registered , and are only valid for logging puposes , if you haul split
firewood or boards it is considered processed and requires commercial plates. The Tri-City MSP post will confinscate wrong plates

That's good to know. Like I said, that's what I had years ago. I'm pretty sure it said logging farm, but I don't remember. I'm sure there's all kinds of restrictions, but I never looked into it at the time. I even ran that same plate in NE for a couple years and how I never got pulled over, I don't know, lol. However, I won't be getting the logging plates again, I don't live out in the sticks like I did before so I prefer to be legal and not have any headaches.

So for plates, I'll know by 7/1/20 when I go to SOS, but for insurance, I got full coverage through West Michigan Insurance/Hagerty for $457 per year. Pretty for leisure and not daily driving, but they know I'll be doing around 200 miles a month. Not bad considering my Dakota is $900 something for PLPD. Imo, it's gonna be worth the money for normal tags, I found a raceway that will give me all the oil I want since they pay to have it pumped out, located near Gun lake Casino. If you get your Deuce and you're not too far from there, let me know, I'll talk to the guy and see if I can hook you up if you'd like.

I was at the sos the other day for another vehicle and was checking over the plate costs by weight. And if I remember correctly, if it were plated for 24,000lbs it was $300 for a 6 month plate. I will be needing to look at insurance costs yet. But i think I will be in the same situation as far as how much driving I would be doing. I take it you plan on running a lot of waste oil through yours? I'm not close to gun lake at all but thanks for the offer. I think I used to go through there when going to three rivers to work on an old Waukesha engine at the garbage dump down there.

Okay, I figured it was gonna be around $4-600 to plate it without restrictions. For fuel, yes, lots of wmo and until I run out, quite a bit of jet fuel. Been mixing 50/50 of jet fuel with wmo and it's been running really good. Once the jet fuel is gone I'll probably be doing 60/40 wmo/diesel mix and reverse that ratio once it gets cold.

So are you still running with your FDC or have you deleted that? What are you doing for filtering that waste oil? I was thinking about a set up for waste oil treatment. Maybe just pumping it through a series of filters from a collection tank to a clean oil tank. What do you do?
