You don't need to remove the pumps to clean them, usually a 5/8 wrench will fit the bottom and twist them off. You should have a screen, rubber gasket and magnet stuck to the bottom part of the pump that is removed. Sometimes you will have to reach inside the bottom with the your finger to get the screen out.

No need to remove fuel pumps. Strainers can be serviced in place. The fuel tank looks very good. Just light brushing.

Hello!

On Saturday 002a started whit out mayor inconveniences; one battery were out of full charge, one of the fuel filters screw was not secure them some fuel spilled. After that the fuel were pressurized, pre heat for 30 seconds and start. Took 10 or 15 seconds to start, blue and white smoke at the beginning once took temp no smoke (I believe injectors are not clean) ,vibrate a lot. Once the engine stabilized no smoke, a little vibration, HZ 60 to 62 (no smooth ride), oil pressure ok! Beautiful sound, test the convenience outlet energy Ok!.
I think it needs to be use in order to check it, so far I am very lucky because it is in very good shape!
Thanks to every body and soon I uploading a video.

Sounds like a perfectly running 002a. They shake because they are twin cylinder four stroke diesels. And it is a big engine with monster pistons. Made to run at 1800 rpm all day long, producing 15 horsepower for 10,000 hours.

When I got my first MEP-002A I thought it had a broken flywheel or something else really bad. Then I found out that was normal. It has been several years now and that generator is still running great ! It can power my whole house since I run a propane water heater and a propane dryer and cooking range.

Hello, Today was a cleaning day, we opened, inspect and cleaned. Some pics.
IMG_1295.jpgIMG_1297.jpg IMG_1300.jpg
After that, we started it with a lot of smoke...once stabilized no smoke 61 to 63 Hz and wonderful sound.

Waiting for the transfer, this home is 3 phase 120 volt. The big question is "to neutral or not to neutral!"

My observations:

0. The next time you take any video have the camera person move (pan) much-much slower and remain steady on critical areas. It was hard to focus on much because of the quick camera panning. I would have liked to have seen a shot with the side cover up (its OK to run a few minutes with side cover open) and the stop solenoid/governor area in operation to see if there is any hunting motion. Also, start the video from a cold crank up.

1. Initially those intermittent puffs of blue smoke was a bit of concern however it did seem to clear up OK once it fully warmed up.

2. Oil pressure looks good.

3. You need some type of battery hold downs on those batteries.

4. I noticed a little wiggle of the fuel tank. Make sure the nuts that retain the bands that come through the skid are snugged up tightly.

5. Your unit appears to have its original paint as evidenced by the stenciled on part numbers. That is a good sign to me that it has not had too hard a life!

6. Would be a good reference point to know what your outside air temperature is when running the unit. After running for a while are you getting any opening of the cooling shutters? I could not tell from the video and it probably needs to be run for a good 30 minutes with a load applied to really confirm that the shutters are functioning properly. They don't ever seem to move much (maybe an inch typically) unless it is above ~80 F and under load. So don't be alarmed if you don't see much movement until you really work it.

7. Take that black plastic shipping material off the bottom of the skid before a piece of it works loose and gets sucked in somewhere.

8. Couldn't really see much of the control box gauges due to glare on gauge faces.

IMO, overall your unit looks good and seems to run like a typical 002.

Hello DieselAddict, what an honor! I have red a lot of your post, thanks!
Yes, Is the second time I started it, after a couple of minutes runs better. I think is some dirty on fuel lines or other places.
Not yet, I am waiting for a transfer in order to put load. So far I connected some lights in convenience and turns on.
Thanks aging!

Hello Mr. Chainbreaker,

0. Yes I my fault filmed fast, I apologies. Next video I'll record in those critical areas and start from the beginning.
1. Once warm the engine goes better. Its the second time I started, so I think that needs more time runs.
2. Pressure ok!!!
3. It's came with battery holder, I am waiting for new a batteries for use it (Believe it or not is very difficult to buy batteries here)
4.I'll check the nut's fuel tank.
5. Good news!
6. I'll note in my to do list for check list. Outside temp here Hi @ 32 Celsius Low @ 17.
7. Plastic out!
8. Next pictures/ video I ll do better.
9. I appreciate a lot your lines! Thanks.

In addition to the great feedback from Chainbreaker, it would be beneficial to start the recording before you start the engine so we can see how it starts. A more stable video will be very helpful. Pick a spot and leave the camera there. That is important for the sound. The sound can help understand what is happening as well. As you move around the sound changes so much its hard to also hear what is going on. Be sure we can read the gauges in the video.

I suspect after you run it more and with a load on it that things will smooth out a lot. Its a very good looking machine.

Hello,

This morning when I was about to start 002a, putted the batteries, connect the first terminal and try the second, a huge spark (very) coming out form last terminal. It was the third time to start the 002a. The only thing different that I did, when I was cleaning the front panel, I pull out the circuit breaker them push it to original position.
I didn't tray to connect again until a friend coming. My question is there a reason to spark conning out from the batteries?

Thanks to help me!

Getting a spark when you connect the battery is normal for those. It can surprise you if you are not expecting it.

Double check that you have the positive and negative correct before you try and start it and otherwise you should be OK.

It's normal to get a small but obvious spark when the battery is connected, as the various capacitors in the system get charged, but a huge spark is not normal.

My 003 had enough of a spark to make a healthy snap when you dropped the neg cable on the battery. To me it was a little spark but to someone else a spark large enough to make a sound is huge.

For me a spark isn't huge till it makes smoke. ;)
