Hello, I'm just joining the site after regaining an interest in military vehicles. I've been aware of Steel Soldiers for years after seeing threads show up in many oddball Google searches I've had. My uncle had a bobbed Deuce (M35A2 I believe) maybe 10 or 15 years ago which started my interest, but unfortunately I wasn't able to get that one. Recently, I've been looking at M809 series 5 tons, and I wanted to gather some more info before I went out and bought one. I'll likely post a thread in "5-ton and up" here shortly with some questions that I have.

Thanks for the add!

Welcome to the Outfit!

Be sure to download the TMs (Technical Manuals) for whatever you decide to buy. They are a free download here on the site. Heck yes, post up your questions and several of the guys will most likely post up...

Thank you, I've read bits and pieces of your thread there but I'll try to give er a look from start to finish.

Having had deuces and 809series and 939series...

And having a strong preference for manual transmissions myself...

There's really a lot to be said for the bigger cab and full airbrakes on the 939s.

Drive both, before taking the plunge. There's no urgency...
That's really solid advice, I appreciate it. Unfortunately, I don't know of anyone that has one I can drive. If I find one I like that's in running and driving condition I'd ask the owner if I can drive it. I know most sellers find people like me annoying, but I likely won't commit to buying anything the day I show up to look at it. From what I can tell, these trucks don't get bought and sold super quickly so I have been trying to be patient and make sure I'm making the right choice.

I'm 5 hrs from you.

I've got an M936A2 I'm in the process of swapping wheels and tires on, and an M818 that needs a t-case. Neither of these are for sale, but they'd give you a side by side comparison of cab dimensions.

The M818 isn't driveable. The M936A2 should be fine once I get wheels and tires on it. It's twice the weight of a cargo truck, so the experience is different and not really applicable.

My M925 is in NM.

If you happen to find yourself in northeast KS...

That's an awfully good looking truck you have there. Right now my schedule is all over the place, but it wouldn't be totally out of the question for me to consider a road trip just to take a look at M809 and M939 series trucks more or less side by side. If I end up finding a time that would work out, I'll send you a message.

Thanks!
