That's true Lanty. I don't think I have ever seen one for the NV4500. It seems like I saw an H1 somewhere with a NV4500 in it and the owner had done some serious heating and bending or cutting and welding of the shifter to make it work.

I see you are going to us a 2 inch body lift. Do you buy or make your own body lift? I made a 3 inch body lift with 3 inch angle iron. I cut the angle iron into 3 inch pieces and welded 2 together to make a 3 inch block, bore a hole thru the center and one is made. In your case you could use 2 inch angle or 2X3 inch angle. I assume this way would be cheaper than buying a lift kit but that's up to you. I didn't know they put #2 flywheel housings on the 6BT. What kind of transmission was on it when it was in the school bus? I have a 4-53T Detroit diesel in a Chevy with a #2 flywheel housing and was wanting to swap to a 6BT and put it in a Ford. A guy in the area here has a bunch of Fed Ex trucks with 6BTs with Allisons and I just assumed they were #3 flywheel housings so I gave up on the idea. Good luck with your swap.

A good cheap body lifts were Hockey pucks with a hole drilled in them, they were a really hard rubber and didnt squeek or rattle. Also, if you run the 4bt-chevy adapter, you have to run a 6 bolt torque converter, and after doing my swap, that 8* of tilt really ain"t that much.

I'm just throwing this out there for heck of it. I know a lot of people don't like the 700R4 because of the early problems they had with them, but if you get the right transmission builder you can get one built like a rock and almost bullet proof. That's not a bad option because you get a 3.09:1 first gear and a .70:1 4th gear. Not a bad gear ratio. As I said just throwing it out there as food for thought. Oh and no electronics either.... :)

The body lifts I have seen for the H1 in kit form are around $600, so I plan on making my own. I'll probably buy a generic 2" kit from eBay to get the pucks and then fab my own fuel tank brackets, etc... The SAE #2 adapter was used to hook up a big Allison trans in those Ford school-buses.

Thanks for the info on the 4BT adapter. That's definitely the cheapest option and would get me on the road the quickest, but I want an OD trans so I guess I am stuck with some sort of swap.

That's good to know. I have seen some 700R4's used in high HP and race applications, but have no experience with them myself. There's another guy on SS doing a Cummins HMMWV with a 4BT and last I saw he was going to use a 700R4.

I would be very happy if I could find a 1994-95 Cummins Ram donor truck where I could snag everything I need in one place.

Here's one more transmission option: Option 5 is find a 998A2 wiring harness, A2 TCM, 4L80E, NV242HD, and an A2 shifter. Maybe I'll swap the front clip out for an ECV unit to give me some more room for my cooling stack and intercooler? Hmmm...

If you do the research, you can get a "standalone" controller for $500 or less. If you run a bouman controller, you can tune it the way you want it and for a great price (a few guys on 4btswaps run them and love them) the torque converter for the 4l80 is already a 6bolt converter and mounts up just find to the adapter plate. I'm getting ready to start my second 4bt swap, the truck already has a 4l60 and ill be replacing it with a 4l80e. I'll keep you up posted.

That Baumann Optishift is pretty nice. I do worry that it's not a sealed unit. The humvee is going to see some pretty hardcore offroad use so the TCM needs to be vibration/shock/water resistant. Do you any of you A2 HMMWV guys have any input as to the durability of the military TCM?

A can of paint on wiring water proofer will fix the leakage issues. As for the vibration, lots of isolation mounts available from $5-40 each.

The other option on the TCM is to open the unit up and spray it with conformal coating. Don't get the urethane or silicone versions as they are difficult to remove if/when a repair maybe required. The acrylic version is fine for your application.

Where are you going to put the shifter? in the back seat?

Actually it should not be all that horribly difficult to fabricate a Remote Shifter for any 5-6 speed trans.... It used to be a Recular thing on All Class 8 Highway Cabover Semis (Yes Civilian stuff LOL ) it would take some Modern Ingenuity and a little bit of persistence But should not be too hard overall.

Great info, Ted! I didn't know that all of those different TCM's were used. Do you think the ones for the ECV with 6.5L TD would be the best match for my Cummins setup?

Maybe. I would go with that combo. Eproms are cheap so changing them is easy if you want to switch it up.

I have an power steering pump off dodge and vaccum pump also you can get 24V
fuel shutoff through cummins and use the grid heater to at 24v setup construction and over seas truck have 24v systems you will find in ops book at cummins dealer.

Thanks for the info, Chris. I was thinking about using a manual start/stop cable on the dash deuce-style. I didn't know 24v was so prevalent overseas. That will help when looking for oddball conversion parts.

That is going to be one awesome project. I would love to have a Cummins H1 with a 4L80E.

Allison3060! Would be super sweet!

ALot of buses use the Allison AT545, which ok for going down the road but I burned one up in the International and had a rebuilt one installed. It will fit in a bunch of trucks and bolt to your 6bt and should last a lot longer in a HMMWV ( way lighter than Naty ) no overdrive though!

It would be a great trans for the humvee if it had overdrive. Sorry the rig is still taking up space in you driveway, Captain. Hopefully, Brian will get it soon. I need to call him for a status update.

I for one.. kinda like the sound of the 6.2 in the Hummers.... I know there crap to a cummins.. but its what I used while I did my short stay in the Army. Nothing like having to run out the gears just to get the armored up ones to get out of there own way or up a hill!

always a cummins man myself,and lots of interesting info in this thread already-ping me if you need any info on 'continental' cummins stuff,im over the biggest hurdle on my cummins build,and now can start planning the layout and choice of parts,will be tuning in here for ideas regularly,-good luck with your build.
