New whistler turbo?

You have to install a muffler. It ins't a factory option.

Forget the muffler comment- if you had a loud whistle before, and don't have one now, it's NOT because a muffler magically installed itself.

I have few trucks with whistler turbos, and some are very loud- others not so loud.

well i had a d turbo and installed a whistler, but it is not as loud as some of the ones i heard? i was concerned i installed it wrong or have to turn up my fuel or something.

Pull your air cleaner element out and then start it and see what it sounds like. If the filter is dirty or you have one that is a real fine micron the air flow is restricted. Turbo's need all the air you can put to them.

There are a couple of different c turbos?Do a search...or post pics so we can let you know which one you have ..Some are louder than others..There are other things that effect it. like lack of fuel,poor air flow,lack of oil to the turbo...

How do you determine what turbo you have? I'm fairly sure I have a whistler on the truck I just got but its not as loud as I would expect (it whistles, but not quite as obnoxiously as everyone says they are)

Do a search for the part number on the turbo..There was a really good thread about identifing turbos by the part number ..It had pics of most of the different types and which engines had which turbos

i found these pictures from a steel soldiers thread. they are the same turbo that is on my truck now? so any help with why it is not loud is appreciated.

Using the headgasket tab method I'd say I have a C block and judging by those pictures and the sound its a C turbo. Not particularly loud but it was MFG in 84 so they might have modified it a little.

Those pictures are of two different types of turbo. Look at the rusty/exhaust side. One gets narrow at the top of the housing near the mounting flange(C), one does not(D). Look at the third picture you posted.


This would be simple if you would post a picture of your turbo.

There is more than two turbos used on c and d engines..but the one listed in the pics as c is the whistler turbo..

Another thread had some info on the C and D block differences and among other things the D block has an updated headgasket that has two tabs that stick out a bit between the two heads visible from the outside. My block doesn't look like it has them so I am determining it is a C block. The block data plate is intact and mostly legible, where does it have a designation between C and D?

the data plate is on the passenger side of the engine or should be and it should state a 1 followed by a letter, at least most of the time. Where it says 1 should be as follows: 1C or 1D. hope this helps
