No title HMMWV

I found a guy looking to sell a 1993 HMMWV and he is desperate to get rid of it. One problem he doesn't have any title paperwork for it. That obviously is a huge concern. Anyone have any luck getting these titled with no paperwork? I didn't know if you could apply for an abandoned title.

I think it may be worthless, but thought it was worth a quick post.

It may have been assembled from parts purchased from various sources (legal and illegal).......I would avoid it like the plague.

Unless he can prove he got it legal he is asking to get visit from the guys in the black Surburbans.

I wouldn't necessarily avoid it altogether, but do your homework first. Find out everything you can on it, and go from there. Absolutely don't put down any cash and take it home until you can verify it's not stolen, and you can find a way to title it. Don't believe anything about titling from the sellers mouth. Anything you find on titling, verify with the agencies involved first.

Now if you just want it for parts, just make sure it's not stolen.

Odds are it has a questionable past.
Most of the ones that were sold at the auction were 85,86,87 .
Like has been said do your homework before you even think about spending a dime on it.

There was just a thread within the past couple weeks about a hummer that was driven through the motor pool fence and stolen from the base. Don't remember where it happened though. Hmmmmmm......

Well, besides the usual buyer be ware type advice, how much info is the seller willing to tel you as to how he has gotten it ?

Also, being a 93 there would be a Vin number on the date plate, and possibly a matching one on the frame.
If you find one, there is a way you can check by Vin in AZ, to see if it was reported stolen or if the Vin is fake.

If you can do those checks before you buy or somehow take possession of this humvee, your dificulty level on geting a title for it goes way down. ( if you discover that it is reported stolen anywhere, even if you did not buy it, but are just doing your due dillegence beforehand, the nice folks from autotheft taskforce will be asking you where is that humvee now, and how you found it thre. Not a big deal, but can be unplesent to take them back to meet with your seller, if it is that type of a vehicle. If it shows all clear, then ther are several ways to get AZ Title for it. The process is not dificult but requires an inspection, and that a Data plate and a matching secondary plate showing a build date and a matching vin number be precent in that humvee. Price $$ and common cence is your best guide in such a process.

The serial number should be on a plate located on the drivers side lower right door opening. Several 93s were released at the auctions in 99 in CA and GA

Why is he desperate to get rid of it? That right there is a red flag for me. It's one thing to say he's desperate to get rid of it because he needs the money and oh here is the title to it. It's another to need the money and dosen't have a title. Just makes you go hmmmmm.

I would follow the advice given before, do your research and find out if the truck is legit. If everything checks out and the price is right then give thought to purchase and jump through the hoops of getting it titled. If not, then walk away.

Also, there are no MIL HMMWV's with the 17 digit VINs like civy vehicles have, no matter what the year. Serial #'s yes, but they arent 17 digit VINs.

I just bought a m35a2 deuce, went to the DMV, got a form for VIN verification, called the Sheriff's Office, Deputy comes and runs the VIN # through DMV. No problems, he fills in my form and I go get the tag. I could care less about a title. Run the Vin# and if it is Ok then buy it. 20.00 and a few minutes of time and I have a tag.

It all depends on the state. GA is by far one of the easiest. Most REQUIRE a title!

Isn't the bill of sale accepted because of the age of the vehicle , I doubt the HMMWV can be titled with a bill of sale.

The deal could be legitimate but depending on the state you live in and the DMV rules, it might not be worth the hastle. In California most of us who have registered a HMMWV have taken in whatever paperwork available along with weight and brake inspection documents (if a new construction) a California Highway
Patrol VIN verification statement, a statement of facts regarding the vehicle and a written bill of sale from the seller. THAT document needs to have his name and address along woth a statement about the amount paid and it wouldn't hurt to have his drivers license number on it. Verify all of that before you put a penny down on the truck. If he's willing to do that much the deal might not be too much of a problem. If you have any friends in Law Enforcement they can run the A Pillar number and see if it's got anu history behind it.

I agree with the above statement. If he is willing to go through the normal legality to get it sold before a dime is put on it then I would think you are OK as long as it does get run through the bureaucracy. I would say it would just follow the same thing a responsible person would do with any non-titled vehicle.

If not, pull the eject lever.

Off topic. but there is one down the road from me for sale. I needs seats. Has a hole in roof for gun.The roof where the gun goes is sealed with a cover. Body is in pretty good shape. Has a clean MD title. He wants 25 grand for it if anyone here is interested.
