Noise levels in cab after installing DynaMat

HanksDeuce wanted me to check the noise levels in my cab since I installed the "Dynamat" liner. So here they are. Just a note that I forgot to cover the steering column hole in the firewall so the actual noise level would be lower then the pictures show.

I actually took five pictures but only these two came out. The first showed the noise level with the engine off. That was 43 decibels . The second was at idle 700 rpm's and it registered 80 decibels. The third is here at 1000 rpm and it is 83 decibels. The fourth is also here showing 90 decibels at 2000 rpm and the last was at 2500 rpm and it was also 90 decibels. That is a considerable drop to what it was. Of course that is going on my own discernment since I didn't use the meter then, but to me it is much quieter.

Is it also cooler since you blocked the engine heat coming through all the holes on the firewall

Rusty--I presume the mat is on the inside of the floor as opposed to below the floor. Did you then cover the Dynamat with a rubber floor mat? or similar that covers the entire floor? Did you also cover the inside fire wall and rear wall of the cab? Sorry for all the ???, just wanted to know more details on how you did it.

I layed the mat down on the floor after painting the floor. I also put it on the firewall and ceiling and underneath the hood.
I plan on adding a hard rubber mat for the floor later. On the rear wall of the lower cab I installed a reinforcement plate and before I installed it I put 2" styrene insulation in there from Home Depot.

Thanks for posting the results! Even after all of your efforts I would still need to wear hearing protection in there. These trucks are just loud. Maybe it's the thin glass?

I can't remember everything, so here's a few questions:
1) You have a hard top?
2) Did you do anything for sound deadening or factory hard top?

I can't remember everything, so here's a few questions:

I know the results are not that good but I still need to finish installing the rear window and there are several gaps on the firewall (like the steering column area) that need covering. I have a hard top and did install DynaMat there too. I also need to install a heavy floor-mat. Also my door window seals are not that good. So add everything up and there is still plenty that can be done to lower the decibels . For me since I'm deaf in my left ear the sound level is fine now !

I put 5/8" rubber mat meant for livestock trailers on my floor and that seemed to help a lot. I still need to get some lighter stuff to put on the firewall though.
Home Depot sells a heavy garage mat that I plan on using for the floor. It will have to go in in sections though since the hump is not a perfect square.

Probably about the same stuff I'd imagine. I'm not sure if there is a better way to cut it, but I used a sawzall which didn't work all that well in my opinion.

Does your truck have a whistler turbo and no muffler? I could check db rating in mine. Might not be identical because our meters are different. I think mine is 190db at 2500 rpm. Without ear plugs my ears start bleeding in about 5 seconds. I have to hook 5 gallon buckets on my ears to catch the blood.

I have the "D" turbo and a decent muffler.

Ah ok. I guess it wouldnt be the same then. I like the insulating factor. Last time I took a decent road trip the floor was over 130 degrees. My feet were a little warm.....

Good to see input from this as I'm planning to do the same to the 109. I have the whole cab pulled apart to repaint and dynamat it. Is it quiet enough now for normal conversation? My main reason is for noise because I take this on long trips and have passengers and radios to talk to the other vehicles in the group and even with the muffler it's still hard to talk at highway speeds.

It's very easy to talk now. My M1028 is actually louder now with it's new low restriction mufflers. Of course you cannot roll-down the windows or open the front windshield and talk.
Just so you know I also put DynaMat in the doors. That really helped with the vibration noise on the road.
