If PB is that good with kids is he also good with stroke victims. I may need a sponge bath.

Is that blue the same shade that ferro's truck will be?

Cool, maybe you can provide some on trail support for a ride or two.

I was thinking Simplex would work and we can just pick a frequency for the rally. Good point about the manuals.... ;-)

I'm trying to get the comm part of the load off of Mike so he can just focus on the MKT.

All the years that we've been trying to get some detailed radio stuff going, it never really got off the ground. It sure sounds like this year will have lots of radio traffic. I'm liking what I hear. Bring tons of radio stuff gang, feel free to put your call signs on your equipment, camp and even on your name tag if you like.

I just finished checking out all my camping gear and getting it ready to load up. I sure hope it cools off by 30 degrees or so, before the rally.

30 or more. It usually does and I'm cautiously optimistic.

30 feet would be good but then aren't you looking at guy wires as well? Maybe not but I want to do this simple.
My base allows for self supported, never had an issue with 30' here in Louisiana.

I'll bring the goods and if it's used cool, if not that's cool too.

Someone mentioned using a repeater. I'm actually looking at a repeater and is UHF. That would allow to be reprogrammed for the gmrs repeater freqs if needed.

I've been wanting to get a repeater for my home brew dstar repeater.

It's great to hear the chatter about radio communications! Last time I could attend, 3 yrs ago I think, we had very few hams but did some successful testing using VHF low band and VHF high (2 meters). We also did some comparisons to FRS and GMRS.

FRS and GMRS: portable handheld to portable only worked "down the road a ways". Line-of-sight goes away really quick with the pine trees. With an elevated antenna on one end there was improvement, maybe a mile but that was intermittent. FRS/GMRS works great within the convoy but forget about getting back into camp.

2 meters: Worked quite well using a short pole, 20 ft or so, on the camp end and mag mount on the distant vehicle. Ran some power, 50W each end. Well worth the effort.

VHF lowband, done with Green Radios! Had an antenna up about 25 ft at camp. PRC-77 to PRC-77 worked quite well. We were on 51 MHz. In camp I added an AM 4477 20W amp and that made a big improvement at the far end. We sent out a rover and were able to work quite well at 6 to 8 miles. Also played with SEM 25 and SEM 35.

Rule of thumb is that lower frequencies follow the terrain better, and there is some terrain out there in Durhamtown!

I was set up behind the MKT on the hill, but that was at the old location. I don't know the new location but a 30 ft tower would be great.

The BIG improvement this year seems to be the abundance of you guys who have made the effort to get your ham licenses!!! Congratulations!

With any luck I hope to be there this year. Three of us are planning to convoy down from the Knoxville area, and we are all hams. We look forward to joining in any way we can help.

Looking forward to the event!!

Please leave me a few warm days and especially evenings. Our summer was mostly way too cold (below 70) and wet (very bad harvest here) and I need some heat back in these old bones. In addition, I do not want to have to carry all my winter cloths around.

Alright, I just won a repeater on flea bay so I'll bring it to the rally. Just need to figure out a split to use. It is a 2m 136-150 range so if that lets you know what frequency range we will be in.

MURS doesn't have repeater freqs so can't use it for that.

I'm sure it'll all be ironed out by the time the rally comes.

Now, I'm picking up the 750 from Andrew and bringing up there and I'm going to put my antenna base on the front deck and probably put the repeater inside it. Can use the 750 for the comms shelter if needed.

Can't wait for the Rally this year. I have a minor offer. Saturday night around the camp fire before the night trail ride, I will have cake, cupcakes and what not in celebration of my oldest boy's 8th Birthday. Technically his birthday is on the 7th but he's excited to share with his GA Rally extended family. Hopefully Zout's wonderful wife can join us and bring some smores. My better half does have one request. Since we've been woke up the past 4 years with MKT announcements over the loudspeakers, she wants the "Happy Birthday" song played over the speakers. I'll get with Wreckerman on that one!!! Please stop by and celebrate with some cake before the night trailride.
