Ok, the long hinted at update....

I developed a knock in the engine and after speaking to several people, we figured it was the crank bearing. I dug in and this is what I found:

She was busted. I also found some assorted goodies while I was in the oil pan:

I started searching the internet for bearings, but every bearing I found for the 1967 Tornado didn't fit. In a fit of inspiration, I called Memphis Equipment (because I'm an idiot and didn't think of them first) and explained I needed a crank bearing. "Which one?" I was asked. "A crank bearing... for the crank!" he went on to say "I mean for which cylinder? 1, 3, 5 or 2, 4 or 6?"

"What do you mean? They have different bearings on the crank?" "Yes". ok./ I need number one. I asked why and he couldn't tell me).

Once the new bearing was in, I fired it up, it ran for about 10 minutes beautifully, then the knock came back.

After a lot of troubleshooting, I pulled the head and piston and discovered the following:

The clip that holds the shoulder pin for the connecting rod had broken (the large half moon in the pic above) and had gotten between the piston and cylinder wall, scoring a beautiful set of lines down the number one piston.

In the process of doing that, it bent my connecting rod (which is why the second set of bearings failed):

And the other spring like pieces were parts of my oil pump.

So now I had a choice. Pull the engine, have the #1 cylinder honed and sleeved, or replace the block....

I reached out to several members looking to just buy an engine, but that didn't pan out.... so I turned to Facebook market place.....

I found a young man in Westlake Louisiana who had an engine for sale as he was repowering his M715 and offered me a great price on it. The Tornado had water in the oil, so I figured head/head gasket( which was good on mine, I could swap them). l While we were chatting, he mentioned he needed some parts and after a little more discussion, we realized I had the parts he needed in my shop . (NDT tires etc).

He asked me what I wanted for the parts and I told him if he was willing to help me with the price of the engine I'd help him with the price of the parts. He offered this deal: Trade the parts for the engine and transmission combo and me help him pull it.

So Fathers Day I made a trip:

Once I got the "new" engine, it was time to star pulling good off of my OG engine and transferring it to the "donor" engine.

I started with the head. I ordered a complete gasket kit as I wasn't sure what all I would be running into, and I didn't want to have to stop and wait for orders to come in...

I only have one engine stand, so I figured it would be easier to leave the OG engine in the bay for now and start swapping stuff with the donor engine on the stand.

Here are various pics of the scavenging

(Of COURSE I didn't know about the oil line on the back of the head before I pulled it.....)

Note the string to keep the cam timing gear in place with the crank timing.

It's AMAZING what some people use when they can't find a pin!
