Ozzytrucker requests advice from Stee-Sol members please.

Good day gentlemen,

I will be visiting USA for 3 another months by road from LAX to NY commencing late March 2014 till mid June 2014 again this year. I am a truck, earthmoving equip, military vehicle and Rail enthusiast. My military interests are 5-ton and up, mainly M series 8's-10's and HET's along with a general interest in milvee's. I went to Aberdeen specially last year, only to find it was closed. The gate guards kindly allowed me go down there anyway after passing a security check to see the remnants which wasn't much, most items had been shipped off to somewhere else?

So my question is;

(1) Could our Stee-Sol friends here advise of any milvee museums or collections and bone yards that are available for visits. I have a car and have no restrictions, can go anywhere I like (no females to slow things down or hurry them up).

(2) I'd like to have a close look at the 5-tons and up like the M915-920 series, M911 and Hets and most appear to be in commercial dealer yards. I see there are a few dealers that sell them like Brandy-Wine, Eastern Surplus, Oshkosh Equipment Sales, Memphis Equipment, are they accommodating for Stee-Sol members to just inspect vehicles at their sales yards even though I would have no intention of making a purchase?

Looks like there will be plenty of things for you to do, go see etc., and just like Oz, stuff tends to be quite a distance apart!

Play your cards right and you could probably leap frog your way across the country crashing down at a different S/S members house each night!

The Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles in in Lexington, Nebraska along I-80. There are so many good things to see along your way. I've been trying to get to Australia with my company but the trips keep getting cancelled.

If you are traveling east bound on I-20 or I-40 I'm not too far from either.

If you want to hang out in Alabama for a day or two we have a spare bunk here at the 'Funny Farm".

I have an M927, and I'm babysitting an M936 wrecker.

I'm also a rail fan and the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum is close to Birmingham.

I was a commercial truck driver for many years and I always wanted to visit Australia and drive a road train.

There is the Patton Museum at Ft. Knox Kentucky, and if you make it to the Detroit area- the Henry Ford Museum has a couple trains inside as well as no end of other stuff.

What Jim said. The Pima Air Museum is adjacent to the airplane boneyard at Davis Monthan Air Force Base. I don't know if they allow visitors at the boneyard but the Pima is well worth a stop.

If you did that route, you could also hit the CAF in Odessa, TX and the Armed forces Museum in Houston and the Battleship Alabama. The southern route has a lot along the way.

In 2010 we paid a few bucks to jump on a bus and drive around inside the boneyard. Tickets are obtained at the museum front desk and pictures are allowed in some areas. Neat experience. At the museum there are 80 acres of aircraft that a guy can touch and feel so this is a 'bucket list' for most motor-heads.

Wow, what a fantastic bunch of guys here at Steel Soldiers - look at this fabulous response to my quest for some Milvee trip advice! Thank you so much for your replies, I've got a Milvee trip planned now, for sure. I've copied each reply onto a separate document I've made up, included the web site links and the ground addresses or contact numbers of each recommended location and tonight, I'm gonna put the whole thing into geographical cross-country order from West coast to East, using my 2014 Michelin U.S. Road Atlas I got delivered from Amazon last week.

I'll take this opportunity to thank you all individually and collectively, for your assistance. And I'm sure looking forward to meeting some of you guys along the way.
