Military train derailed recently and some cool vintage footage. Is that a 5 ton high railer in the yard?
Steel Soldiers now has a few new forums, read more about it at: New Munitions Forums!
The southern forest heritage museum close to Alexandria, LA highlights the history of Camp Claiborne and the training grounds for the WWII troops that trained to run the railroads on Europe.
lotsa soft targets there,,,, until the dozers showed up
I kind of like that centennial in the line up helping out.
yes you are correct it is a M52(a1 or a2) .. short wheelbase, 55g tank(s), and the trailer air hose/elec rack can be seen alongside the tell-tale vertical pioneer rack ...Looks like an M52, perhaps. Almost certainly M39-series based. Pretty cool, never seen one of those before.
Cheers

msgjd, several years ago, one of our members posted some pictures of these converted M52 rail trucks taken in South Korea when he was stationed there.yes you are correct it is a M52(a1 or a2) .. short wheelbase, 55g tank(s), and the trailer air hose/elec rack can be seen alongside the tell-tale vertical pioneer rack ...
never seen one myself, would be interesting to know whether this was a specific TAACOM build, or a shop mod .. I wonder what's in the weight box .. Cement? Lead? ilmenite? Gold?![]()
back when i enlisted i chose army railroading, since it was the 1970's , northeastern roads were in decline and I couldn't hire on anywhere .. I was thinking at the worst case the army would send me to west germany , but the recruiter tells me "I don't think the army has those anymore, Vietnam beat us up and we're short of truckers , that's the job the army is going to place you based on your current occupational experience"... So like a dummy i believed him until a certain day in Basic we marched to the supply depot and right then and there rolled in a big black Alco lettered "US Army Transportation Corps" trailing several box cars . Oh was i ever mad .. Although I like my old trucks, it still burns me up today to see the army still soliciting for the RR-related MOS's. .
Here's a nice modern-day video courtesy of Army Transportation Museum, Ft Eustis VA .. The same EMD-models in the video were present at FLW, Mo @2010 (and the old Alco's long-gone) when I went to pick up a truck and visit my old stomping grounds
Yep! It's had that nickname as long as I remember !The old salts there referred to the post as "Fort Useless". That was a hoot!
