Years ago we were doing Motor Stables (weekly vehicle maint) and all the vehicles had to be started and idled for a least 20 minutes.

We had a young 2nd Lt. that knew everything there was to know about any military subject you could name.

My buddy was sitting in the drivers seat of his deuce when the Louie opened the passenger door and told him to crank the truck.

The conversation went something like this:

Louie, "Specialist Smith.....start this vehicle.

Spec. Smith, "Sir.....I can't start the vehicle with you standing there."

Louie, "Specialist Smith start this ^(**^$%(% truck right now!!!!"

Spec. Smith, "Yes Sir".

Deuce, "Vroom, vroom, vroom........douchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh".

Louie, "ARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!"

Motor Sergeant, "Stupid arsed Louie".

Battalion Motor Officer, "HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.........you told him to start the &$&$^$### truck with your dumb arse standing there."

Company Commander, "Why me Lord?"

First Sergeant (later that day), Spec. Smith.......three day pass for excellent job at Motor Stables.

I can't remember when I last heard the term "motor stables". You certainly brought back a memory there Wreckerman.

For a M35A2 ( 4 inch pipe) a regular tomato can works just perfect. For a M818 (5 inch pipe) one of the smaller coffee cans works well. Been using those two cans for years and have never had the wind blow one off of the pipe..

To be really cool about this, there are warning streamers available from aviation sources. Google "remove before starting engine streamer" ...there are several available, and they're not expensive.

These are about 24" long and bright red. Attach the streamer to whatever cover is used to protect the stack. A24" streamer flapping in the corner of the windshield's view SHOULD give us a hint. If not, the streamer will make finding the can easy after launching it....

I use a quart size tomato juice can. Rattle caned it od. Fits very well and will blow off as soon as it starts up. I think 50 feet is the best so far. If i could only remember to remove it.

I drilled a hole in the patch that I had welded at the bottom of the "J" pipe Which was all ready rusted out. Watch out when you start it up as that slobber/soot/oil makes a mess and stains.

I like the idea of a small drainage hole maybe even with a tab on it. I just would leave it open permanantly so any water going into it will just go out, and the spilling of exhaust air will be minimal. That combined with some kind of can on top of it or this top which closes when standing but exhauste pressur will open it during driving. When I have to go to the DoT checking, I can close the tab so the exhaust is airtight. (strange actually, I can have an exhaust ending under the fender, but one my exhaust ends where it does now, I am not allowed to have holes in the pipe under the fender.)

A lot of here in reply, makes my mood good again.

Bootom line: I will drain the exhaust pipe before starting, but the general opinion here is that I do not have to worry about anything as long as the pipe is empty when starting. Correct?

i would recomend drilling a hole and welding a threaded bung into the hole and screwing in a small 1/4 turn ball valve at either the elbow or other lower point in the pipe, then make draining it part of your pre-trip inspection.

I am one of the ones who uses a 2 liter pop bottle. (I use Mt dew, green kinda matches) Just cut down a couple inches for a deuce, probably a little more for a 5 ton.

Nice and simple only costs a buck or so.

I am working on my second cover right now, the first one threw itself away in the trash. Kind of forgot about it, fired up the truck and it landed in the trash can right beside my truck and by the time I got home that day the garbage man came and took out the trash. So I had to go back to the store for another bottle. Even my green truck is into recycling.

I got a sheet metal screw in the glovebox just for that little hole I made . I put it in when I go for a Safety Inspection to get regular truck plates. Now I don't need the inspection as I run Antique (once in my life time) plates .
