RIM CHANGEOUT (Paired 24 Stud) with Run-Flats

Finally got the spare tire opened up. It has magnesium runflats. (I though the Army and possibly other military branches discontinued the magnesium type!!???)

Is it possible to remove the run-flats and reinflate the tires -or- are double bead-locks required. I never de-flate the tires to less than 20 psi.

I have zero experience with the Hmmwv rim but I will tell you I think it’s a bad idea. 16.5 wheels have the least pronounced bead grove of all the wheels that I have personally seen. You don’t deflate so you might be ok. Very least I would personally do the pvc pipe. I’m a big fan of the rubber things that everyone throws away

I dont run low psi, either. But, when I had a blowout on the interstate at 65mph, I just eased over into the grass to change it out. Who know what would have happened without the runflat in there.

I just wish I had my vehicle to experience a blowout! Lol I hate to wait for anything!

Yes, you can run the tire & wheel without a runflat. I have for a few years in my CUCV. It will be challenging getting the bead to seat but I use either. Good luck.

You can run without runflats in the tire, just be aware if it gets too low on air you can break the bead as the bead area is less than a standard rim because it was intended to have bead locks, I am running Centramatics on both of my HMMWVs and love them, nether has runflats, one has Trailworthy bead locks

Have included lots of fotos of the tire / rim dis-assembly. Everything looks great, even the rims (will measure tomorrow) and inside of tire. These run-flats are different to the ones shown in the old TMs. Will look more closely to confirm there are no cracks in the run-flats. Have included part numbers. Can only attach 10 fotos.

I will stick with the 1 piece beadlock / runflats.

Just for clarity, I summarized the run-flats that I just removed. I checked Hutchinson's website and did not find the type I have. It seems these were manufactured in 2018.

I think best to find the double bead-locks and install same. I am sure that balancing will be better rather than re-assembling the present set.

Yes.

These wheels have 15deg bead shoulders with no safety humps - which means the tire beads come off very easy, once the air is out. But even at 20 psi, if you accidentally hit a curb, that could be enough for the tire bead to separate some from the rim, followed by a sudden (and dangerous) deflation.

Looks like best option is to remove the run-flats as a whole and install double bead-locks to avoid having the tire come off. I have checked http://www.trailworthyfab.com/Hummer-Wheel-PVC-Insert.html . These seem to ensure the tire stays against the wheel beads. (Any comment??)

I have also contacted Hutchinson to see if they will sell to a "civi". Awaiting their response. I believe the Hutchinson double bead-locks may be of softer material.

Yes.

In other words, you MUST run a headlock if you want to be safe, although some don’t. Those who don’t are playing a dangerous game.

My humble opinion, Pick up a new as possible set of MT's or OZ's instal what you have and add a set of centramatics. It will never ride like a pickup.

The PVC doesn't give at all like the rubber runflat, so Trailworthyfab requires you to tell them exactly what tire/rim combination you are running in order for it to fit properly.
Then you should stick with that brand/model of tire whenever you replace them in order to keep the proper fit.

Other than that, there are a lot of people that run them and seem to like them. I haven't heard any complaints.
