Coincidentally, I've been reading up on intake air density recently, and it bugs me when even Banks' web site calls a charge air cooler "intercooler".
Thankfully, Gale still refers to them by their correct name in conversation.

It's going in my Ram, and without a second turbo or a blower to plumb it in between, it's a mere charge air cooler. Sorry.
 
It's it's inter turbo and intake I say that makes it an inter-cooler. Now that I've made my opinion known, that should settle that...

Not seriously, I was hoping to get ideas for mounting one in a cucv.

I do respect your opinion, corelokt, but I respect facts more. That LOTS of people refer to charge air coolers as intercoolers (because it sounds fancier?) doesn't change the fact that there are very few actual intercooler applications out there.
As far as mounting a charge air cooler in a CUCV goes, I would strongly recommend using metal fasteners.

That's too bad. Then you can't take advantage of the amazing prices Rock Auto has on a close-out sale on a bunch of K30 parts.
Or maybe you can...there are photos with many of them.
 
I'd like to keep it all simple due to my ability to make bullet proof into fubar.
The last few years everything I touch goes from gtg to shtf like twin turbos and a shot of nitrous. Today I took the scamp out to pay a speeding ticket. Got stuck in the yard mud. Got out and hit the car wash. Back home, stuck again, and a big cloud of blue smoke from the engine. So it goes.

I don't think there are a lot of guys out there with a symantics cooler on a 6.2/6.5L. I don't think with the low boost you can run on those engines the temperature rise isn't high enough to justify one. If you had a Cummins in there running 30 psi boost then a symantics cooler would be required.

I know of 4 guys with Cummins 6bt engines, and one with a 4bt in a square body 73-87. If I run across those pickups in the next week or so I will see if I can take some pictures.

Hey, sounds like your luck (or lack thereof) is a lot like mine.
 
With a name like "the flu farm" how bad can it be?
I've gone through, let's get the fingers and toes out...
2 transfer cases (aluminum 208s)
3 transmissions (700r4s)
2 sets of heads (1 coolant loss, one blown gasket)
1 engine (turbo blew the head gasket, coolant into the oil)
1 set of crank bearings (cut oil line)
2 radiators (one old, one thin aluminum)
Bought 3 np205s to make one good one for a 4L80E (one was wrong, one was right, but bad input shaft, one for the right input shaft)
That's the big stuff.
But things are going to get better, I can feel it...

I'd appreciate it. I have an optimizer with arp studded lower end and heads. The turbo I have can push a lot of boost if I get injection pump enough to handle it, and my exhaust can handle the flow. An air cooler is becoming a good idea. One guy on dieselplace with a similar build is making good power with his.

Since you just want to cool the air between the turbo and the intake. I think the proper terminology is aftercooler. Since it is after the last air compressor. At least that is what Cummins calls the 4BT cooler mounted on the valve cover. However, intercooler might be appropriate depending on what parts you find. People taking the cooler that went between several stage compressors on airplanes and such is how intercooler became such a common generic name.

Several people on other websites with 6.? turbo engines have made air to air coolers for the air. Most seem to start with an early Duramax cooler. Modification of the air inlet/outlet seem to be mandatory. Along with possible radiator cutting/patching.

Water to air coolers that have their own radiator, can be mounted on the intake and use a boat sump pump to circulate the water seem to be something that will fit easier and are actually more efficient. However, they are probably great for a drag race, tractor pull or something like that. I can see how driving in the mountains and doing long grades or multiple pulls in a short time and hot weather will make it less and less effective.

Other people really push water or alcohol mist injection. A button in the cab or even a thermostat can be rigged up to spray into the intake. Windshield washer pumps seem to work great for this. But, what happens when you run dry 2 miles from the top of a long grade with a full trailer?

Banks makes an air to air unit for I think 6.9/7.3 Ford engines that won't fit in the cowl of a square body. But, it will fit between the frame rails under the radiator. Small computer fans or those things B&M makes for their coolers might work great with that.

I played in this rabbit hole for a while when I was trying to plan out the Cowdog GEP 6.5 turbo set up. I just don't know how my complete truck is going to work as a system enough yet to know if a cooler is going to be needed. I saw a Youtube interview with Gale Banks where he claimed every 7° drop in air temperature results in 1% power increase. How much above ambient will a turbo raise the air temp? 100°, 50°, 200°?
