This is probably THE most common issue with these engines. Hopefully it was not run too much with a leak. makes for harder starting(starter wear) and gallery fuel pressure issues can cause damage to the unit injectors…

Given how long it sat between operation (7 years), I think this was a new issue. I had it idling for about 20 minutes before the air leak became obvious - essentially 60 seconds of pain at it first started idling lower and then continued down hill. I have only tried to start it twice since. But new fuel lines are here Monday and hopefully it's rolling so we can determine what else needs attention.

And thanks again for all the wonderful info. It's been SO HELPFUL. Will update next week with status.

Just an update - truck is running well and driving. THANK YOU all but especially Ronmar!

CTIS isn't working - all five lights are on and not blinking. I did read that means I need a new controller, which conveniently I do already have because it was one of those spare parts I wanted with me 8 years ago when it was being continuously operated. If that doesn't solve things I'll be digging in and maybe asking for help.

The tranny is lagging a little (or it could be the throttle response, but feels more transmission) starting in D (2nd gear) and reverse. The fluid was changed it about 7k miles ago (and 8 years 😬) - probably should do that? Or anyone, what's your opinion? Necessary? Possibly helpful?

The air line to raise the cab leaks, so need to fix that so I'm not fully reliant on the hydraulic manual operation.

Finally, if it's easy to point to a good resource for troubleshooting the hydraulic system, repairing, bleeding etc, that would be super helpful. The spare tire function is completely not functional.

Lots of other stuff to work on - the box has a solar and battery storage system I would like to expand and tie into the alternator and cab battery with shutoff etc. And then theres the endless list of preventative maintenance and dream upgrades.

Cheers for now!

Ty

Yea 5 solids is a dead controller. Should be able to simply power down and plug in the new one. Make sure the ground connection at the bottom case bolt is good… CTIS usually has issues with air leakage, and since it is trying to control the air bombs we call tires with a pressure gauge and a stop watch, it will fault at the drop of a hat…

top of the engine is a throttle position sensor for the transmission controller. The TCU relies on throttle position info heavily to determine how it behaves. If that is not working correctly it will be shifting based on min and max RPM inputs Which does not make for smooth timely shifting…

I did a video on checking the sensor operation and telling the TCU to re-calibrate that input signal…
