Storing TowBar

At first I was thinking about inside as well but here it actually does 2 things, 1 easier to get to, 2 helps protect the rear winch controls from getting ripped off if I run a tree down the side.

I was going to do that on my M925. When I drive the M816 I just throw it in the back.

If you don't, have a tractor, but a cargo bed instead, you can stow a medium towbar under the front foot of the bed. There are two box shaped brackets meant for lashing the staves from the cargo cover bows under the front of the bed. ...

I used that method before I got a M925, but kept mashing my fingers against the bottom of the bed. I still use it when I don't have a winch on the truck, but now wear good gloves for padding.

Yep climbing up there alone and us Seniors/HandiCrappers will have
had enough, let alone haul up a 2- 40 Pound implements. Maybe make the
spare tire hoist swivel 180degrees so it can do the lifting! Hmmm, gives me
an idea...!

When I designed and built my civilian hitch (I sell the parts to do the hitch only)
I added a place for a Medium towbar. The towbar is held down w/ U Bolts.
It adds much needed weight in the rear as well.



I just grabbed an 83,000 Lbs towbar for the M916...Looks like I will be doing this
exercise again soon in the Artisan's M916 thread .

View attachment 544925I mounted mine here using a pintle and 2 shackle mounts, the wife can put it up and take it down by herself by putting the ring on the pintle first, then lift each leg one at a time.

This is just a old fashion medium/heavy, not the tow bar from HE11, which If it was and your wife can remove/store by herself, we ALL know who would ware the pants in that household. I mounted my medium on a set of 4 pins that I install on the left outside of my bed (m819), with all my adaptors in a box, this makes getting down and storing fairly easy.
My TBFH is stored hoping I will NEVER need it.

So far thats the best place I have seen a mount. Close to the ground and close to the rear of where it will be used. Was thinking something like what you did with a pintel and extra shackle mounts but since I am a cargo was thinking inside of the bed front panel.

This will work just fine forever TILL you have the bed FULL of stuff.

An 83,000lb tow bar? That's like, a really heavy tow bar.....

The only thing I might carrie is some sail boat fuel or maybe a couple of buckets of prop wash.

Artisan, from the photos, it look s like your towbar does not have the MWO upgrade. You should consider doing it. Lots of threads on this.

After reading the above MWO, it does not sound like the OLD TB with the MWO is much better then without, I would be more worried about heat stress and metal fatigue of the tubes where the welding was. There might be a reason why the NEW tbs with the reinforcement are about 1 1/2" longer.

The 936A2 I won recently has three L shaped hangers on the drivers side of the bed just above the rear wheels to mount a medium Tow Bar. I haven't used it yet but from the wear it looks like it hung there for a while.

Well I thought i would share this we have a kit for stowing your tow bar that really simplifes the whole problem of where do i stow tow bar when I am not using it and won't be in the way but easy to get to check it out let us know what you think.

I have seen this on a 816 as well. Only have a pic of 'lunette' end though, it's the yellow tube/screw latch though there was probably a large strip washer used under the latch/bolt(?). I am not sure what retained the other end.


I guess that on a wrecker, the towbar is used way more than on any other type of truck, so really handy/quick access is preferred.

A little off subject, what are the round holes in your bed for? I assume the Square ones or for the crane which look great and plenty strong.
