Thoughts and opinions on turning up the fuel on a deuce

I just read a how to article on turning up the fuel on a deuce injection pump. What kind of real gains are there if I do that? Also, are there any adverse effects? Have any of you done it and if so what kind of difference does it make. I searched for a thread on this subject but the information I found did not go that in depth.

I would turn up the low rpm fuel and down thi high rpm fuel. It will give you more torque and make the truck seem alot faster and you probably won't throw a rod on the freeway.

It is well worth the time to do it depending on how far your truck is out of adjustment it will make a big difference. I have turned up both my trucks one was way out the other a little.
you can use a boost gauge and set it by the TM and not have to worry about installing a pyrometer. If you want more you need to install one.
I think the boost settings are 5psi at 1600rpm set with droop screw and 10psi at 2400rpm set with main fuel adjustment.
I cant rember the TM # There are many posts on this do some more searching.

I guess the first question is, do you need it? My truck red-lines, towing a trailer, without much effort. But I am at 880ft MSL. After the number of motor's that lunched on this site recently, I would err on the side of caution.

I'm going to turn the fuel up on mine as soon as I get a pyro. I've driven trucks that were turned up and the difference is night and day.

In my experience there is a big difference in how high the fuel is set on trucks comming right out of GL. I've got a truck right now that has more power than any deuce I've ever driven right from GL. It blows out black smoke like crazy and think it may be turned up too much. It looks as if the seal has been cut and tried to mash the lead back together. I think this may be from soldiers "shade tree tinkering" to get their truck to outrun others in the unit.

That is one of the questions I am addressing now. I do not think I need this mod right now. Maybe later down the road when I start driving and towing with these trucks. But for the little driving I do now, I thinking them alone is a good idea.

Also, the blowing of black smoke in my mind is not a good thing. I know many people see it as a sign of power but I see it as a huge waste of fuel. If I am just going to dump that much fuel into the system I see anopther reason not to do it.

All of our trucks are turned up with boost gauges installed. We use locally purchased air pressure gauges with appropriate scales. We run 15 pounds boost for normal acceleration. They will develop 30 pounds boost at full fuel, but we limit the time duration. My son kicked butt on a stock Ford diesel dually with his M35. The good sense fo the driver determines the success of the modification.

Also, the blowing of black smoke in my mind is not a good thing.

I see it as a great thing. How else can I impress my "green" environmentalists friends?

Earth Day is a great time to put the trucks out front and let them idle all day blowing nice puffs of black smoke.

I would err on the side of caution on turning up the fuel. I have one that just flat out flies compared to the other truck. Never checked the fuel.....

After turning up the fuel one turn, the first thing I noticed was that I didn't have to apply throttle when starting out in first gear. The truck was much more difficult to drive without the extra power.

The pyrometer is a must. I was surprised at how fast the EGT goes up when pulling a hill. It would be very easy to burn up a turbo.

It would be well worth your time to search further on this subject. It has been covered in great detail, and took me most of a day to read, and I found everything I needed to know, including answers to the questions you asked above.

Try using Google to search the site. That's how I found the info. In the search box try something like:

turn up injector pump deuce site:steelsoldiers.com

When you put in site:steelsoldiers.com you are telling Google to only search this site. It works great.

What the heck, I will do it for you!

Cheers!

That is one of those tricks I wish I had known sooner. Thanks! If I do pump it up a bit, I was going to stay at half a turn. Is that too much?

I could tell you but the Search Enthusiasts and Purists would attack and kill us both . The Deuce forum is for Purists who won't even drill a hole in their deuce unless it is recommended in the TM. Deuce Modification and Hot Rodding is where you will find out how to do the naughty bits like turning up the fuel. There is an active thread there right now that is one of the best I have seen on this topic.

i turned mine up till it just started to give black smoke at full throttle . then with the bigger tires and muffler on ther im gettin about 2600 and 15 at 1500. it makes a huge difference probably doubled the accelleration . before i turned the fuel up it would take me about a mile to get to 55 when getting on the e-way now i hit 55 before the end of the entrance ramp probably about 1/4mile .every truck is different so there is no set amount 1 turn does nothing on some and to much on others it depends if they have been turned up already or not.a pyro is best but a boost gage will give you a pretty good idea of the change you made.i have been running mine turned up now for about 5yrs and havent hurt it yet but going a little less would probably be a good idea:roll:

oh and as far as fuel useage i get 14mpg with mine pulling my m105 on the highway but i have 15.5s on there so i'm sure yours will be less with stock tires.i think it helped my mpg since now i dont have to stay full throttle all the time just to get the truck to go

That does sound like a big difference. I think I will try it, but I do not want to turn it up much. I have one duece with stock tires and one with bigger. So I will try it on the deuce with larger than stock tires first.

big tires load the turbo more so you will see it spooling up faster on the one with big tires than you will on the other on .but the end result is the same it will be way faster :-D
