Top end oiling

As I mentioned in another thread, I adjusted my valves a couple days back and got one wrong, so I went back in and fixed it today. While I was in there I decided to run the engine without the valve covers installed to make sure I had no valve clatter again and check clearances after a short run. While running I noticed that several of the rockers have little or no oil flow coming up and into the top channel, while others have plenty of oil traveling to both sides of the rocker. I did slide the rockers that were suspect up the pivot shaft and checked the oil passages to see if they were plugged and it seems they are clear. I have read that the front head gets less oil than the rear because of the system also supplying the compressor and injector pump, but there are several on both heads that are this way, even with well oiled rockers on either side of them. Do I need to just forget about this, or might I have some kind of sludge blockage in the oil channels that feed the rockers through the pivot shaft? It should be noted that I found no evidence of galling or wear where the rockers ride. It just seems like all the rockers should show some oil flow. Some of them showed absolutely no oil coming out the top into the lube channel.

I noticed the very same thing. After looking at the tops of the push rods and mating surfaces of the rocker arms and detecting no damage, I decided that they must be getting lubrication.

I really would love to know. It would seem that it has to be partial blockages of oil passages or channels somewhere within the rocker pivot shaft or the rockers themselves.

Study the oil gallery diagram and make note of which rockers got fed less oil. It would be interesting if 2 engines had the same pattern of oil flow....or not.

According to the oil diagram, the oil comes from the rearmost cam bushing to the backend of the rear rocker shaft. Then it goes to the front rocker shaft and then ends down at the front of the head. If some rockers are not getting oil, I would disassemble the rockers and clean them thoroughly.

What Jason mentioned is worthy of note though. Adding some external oil lines to the head would be a great failsafe for uneasy issues such as these. Some careful drilling, tapping, and copper line fitting would greatly increase oil to the valve train. But where to run the lines to and from?

I believe that the lines were from the main bearing pipe plugs to the pipe plugs on the front head and the rear head. I have pictures on my phone; will post them this afternoon.

This a varied group of pictures that I took with my camera of a White 2-155 tractor. In addition to the external oil lines, there is a bypass filter. There is also a shot of a strange oil line just behind the main oil filters.
