Tow Bar Pins - Updated

As noted kanderson@newventures.org works for one of the 2 companies that make the pins for the US Gov. I have been in contact with them. Here is the deal;

The contact name is Ken Anderson. He seems to be a very nice guy to work with.

They make both the 3/4 and 1" pins using the process as noted on the thread I linked to about the tow bar problem earlier in this thread.

They have a limited quantity of the pins that are over-runs from Mil contracts. Once these pins are gone there will be no more until they have another contract to make a large quantity so my advise is that if you need them, get them now or wait until...?

The ordering process is as follows;

#1) Email Ken with the size and quantity you need and give him the ship to address.

#2) He will figure the shipping cost (Per Ken, probably using the US Post Office flat rate box program) and let you know the total cost. You pay for the parts and actual shipping cost, nothing more.

#3) You send Ken a check made out to the company (New Ventures) and he will ship your pins.

The 3/4 pins are $22.00 and the 1" pins are $24.00

The price includes the pin and attaching cable, complete Mil-Spec unit, ready to go.

Note: Just in case you have forgotten:
The "Medium Hunter tow bar" uses the following pins:
*1" for the pivot at the pintle (1 each)
*3/4 for the length adjustment (2 each)
*1" for the bar to feet attachment (1 each foot, 2 total)
*Either 3/4 or 1" for the vehicle side of the foot depending what size foot your using. (1 each foot, 2 total)

So, if your using the "large" feet and replacing all the pins you need 2 at 3/4" and 5 at 1".

I also have mil-spec pins, however, I also do have a set of grade 8 bolts (7/8") with bushings. Alot of the old gassers have the 15/16 holes that a mil-spec pin won't fit through. I wonder did they origionally have 15/16" feet????
Is it possible that the 15/16 were supposed to be 1" but not made to specs? Possibly rust and several coats of paint have made the holes 1/16" smaller?

Would it be reasonable/possible to take a 1" drill or even better, a 1" straight reamer and make the holes 1" so that you could use the properly rated Mil-Spec pins?

Are the mounting holes of the "15/16" brackets the same as the mounting holes for the 1"? If they are I would be very tempted to carry a spare set of 1" brackets, some grade 8 bolts to attach them with and the tools to swap the brackets out. Swapping the brackets would only take a few minutes and would insure the use of the "Correct" pins.

Of course reaming the holes to 1" would correct the issue from that point on without having to change/swap anything. If drilling/reaming the holes a small bottle/can of primer and an "Artist brush" to touch up the inside of the holes after the towing operation to prevent rust would be a nice idea as well.

I'm not sure which large towbar you refer to. I do have some 1.5" pins for the MRAP towbar leftover. Also have a few 3/4". Sold the last of my available 1" pins last night for some reason. Also have some monster 50ton 2.25" diameter pins. I sell them for what I've paid for them in the past, which isn't cheap, but it is what it is. 1" went for $12 for example, while 3/4" went for $11. It's half price of the new ones from the OEM, so you should consider buying from him. Mine are possibly used, but I would not intentionally sell one that has burrs in it. Point is, they're used, and new is always better, but expensive. I can't afford to pay $24 for a pin.

From time to time you see a towbar foot for sale with pins on the internet. Good luck with the pins. I still say used Mil-Spec is better than new Grade 8, but you must inspect your pins after every use and replace in case of wear.
Of the hundred or so pins I've worked with, I've only had to discard two for excessive burring, which weakens the overall strength of the pin.

By the way Angus, didn't I read somewhere that you wrote that the MRAP bar can be converted (With feet?) to the 1" size to be used with the Deuce? IF that is correct, where can a set of those parts be obtained? (Do you have them?) Am I confused, retarded, completely mistaken? Straighten me out on that!

The reason I am asking is that if that is in fact correct then unless I am missing something, (Assuming you have an appropriately sized tow vehicle) you could use the same MRAP bar for towing anything from the Deuce to the M920.. Again.. Please straighten this out for me.... Sigh...

Yes. There are adapters so you can get down to 1" pins for a 5ton/deuce and also adapters to get down to 3/4 for smaller trucks. I got my adapters from an MV salvage lot so I can't say what they were from originally.

use plow pins from a fisher plow set up. they're 1' and the right lenght, and you can grind one side flat. paint it green and it's original .

I'd like to get feet for my MRAP Oshkosh towbar as well. I've got a good Medium towbar complete and it works fine but I'd like to justify buying the Square Tube towbar that won't work on anything in my current fleet. It's a beast and rated at 83,000 pounds with the 1 1/2" pins. I'm sure that would be lower using 1 inch pins but I think it'd be neat to use for once.

The Oshkosk medium MRAP towbar is by far my favorite. I love the design! It's easier to handle than the Hunter, doesn't roll around, stores nicely, and is heavier duty. The problem is the adapters from 1.5" to 1" for towing older vehicles are not hitting the market yet. It took me six months to find a set of 1.5" to 1" adapters like Ron has, and they have to be shaved slightly to fit in the deuce and 5 ton, but it's not a problem. Ron has been fantastic in supporting me and SS members by giving us a loaner where we could evaluate a local but professional machinist built replicating the feet so more users could use on a deuce rather than just the heavier M900 series vehicles.
Many of my buyers bought them with intention of fabricating their own, but I don't have sufficient feedback to support with more info. I've sold almost 20 of those towbars and most are happy to have them.

I have a few spare parts I could sell like pins or feet or pintle parts if needed.

Enjoy your mil-spec towbars. They're the best. And Hunters are great too, I love them, but we all have our favorites.

I know, it's crazy. Prices have gotten rough. I paid $125 shipped for mine a month ago.t
I only paid it cause I have been trying for six months to get a set, and it was my only opportunity during that entire time.
Everything is going up. Hopefully, he'll give us a decent price.

I have two feet for a large tow bar. The pins that connect to the ends of the tow bar
are 1 1/2 " Measure diameter at 1.472".
The part number is stamped on the foot as follows:
19207
10894253
MFR 4L516
Th part number stamped on the 1 1/2 " pins is as follows:
19207
10929861
MFR 1V513
The part number stamped on the 1" pin that is for the other end of the foot is:
10894254

Hopefully this info will help someone.

What I need is another of the 1" pins with clip, and a clip for the 1 1/2" inch pin.
By clip, I mean the thing that looks like a bobby pin that is inserted in the hole at the
end of the pin to keep it from falling out.

I am also interested in finding any TM's that reference these parts.
