i am having trouble downshifting and i dont know ht. i have to coast don to about 15 mph before i can drop from 4th to 3rd or it will grind.

any ideas?

I tried double clutching, only helped a tad sometimes. I have not tried to raise the rpms, I can give that a try.

How would i differentiate between a bad shift key or a bad syncro?

Anyone have any pics of either part?

If you raise your rpms into the "sweet" spot, you should be able to get her in gear pretty easily. Just go to neutral, no clutch, hit the throttle a little and slip in 3rd.

I will give it a try. I am sure its easy once perfected but now it goes against everything i know. I am trying to stop or slow down so raising rpm's seems counter intuitive.

The good news is almost every trucker in the world has learned how to do this with ease. I practice in my deuce every chance I get just for fun. It works good!

The idea is, if you are downshifting; Your trans will be going much faster once you downshift it because you are still moving at speed, but your engine speed will be the same as if was still in 4th. If you give her a little throttle before you shift into 3rd then you are making an easier transition on your engine and therefore an easier shift

I would bet the sycro is bad.

And here's a generic pic of a syncro.

The syncro has a cone or tapered shape inside that engages and helps match the speed of the gear set that it is attached to. This helps with a smooth shift transition.

Reving up or matching engine speed, sort of does the same thing.

cool, thanks for the explaination. I wont knwo for a few days as I have to tackle 2 wheel cylinders. Firs time for everything.

Lets review, I ONLY had the truck about 9 weeks:
Alternator belt
HH replaced and know familiar with it
Primary spin on kit
New secondary and final fuel filter
Fuel tank removed and cleaned
Fuel sender cleaned via ultrasonic bath
Fuel cap cleaned via ultrasonic bath
3 lever switch disassembled to replace internal fuse
New flasher installed
Flasher level disassembled to inspect
Wiring harness behind flasher lever was repaired to prevent shorts
Mechanical oil psi gauge installed
Folded both lower front fenders and had to plasma cut off and repair
Installed 24vlt to 12 vlt converter
Rear view camera and lcd screen
Hurst shifter and machined adapter for it, wired line lock button into horn
Oil change due to flooded crank case (twice)
Fell of the front bumper and slammed head on pavement. (took the rest of the day off)
Inspected clutch free play
Rebuilt manifold heater nozzle

Now need to do 2 wheel cylinders and bleed the system.


Not bad I guess for I never wrenched on one before.
