Here is my take on it,

Do I like the new "upgrade"? No. Did Chris ask for my opinion or would I expect him to? No.

I think the main reason I don't like it is I don't do good with change and I'm not computer savvy enough to jump right into a new operating system and know what I'm doing. Patracy seems like he knows a bunch about computers (at least a bunch more than me) and he said the old site needed to go. All I can do is trust him in this matter and hopefully it will all work out.

While I don't really like the new site, I know Patracy has spent untold hrs with the "upgrade" and that makes me a little hesitant to B!tch too much. I'd just hate to see him "throw in the towel". While the "upgrade" is less than ideal, it's still miles ahead of when Mangus was absently running things.

That first part, I believe, sums a vast majority of things up. Change is hard to deal with.

I'll admit, with the mountain of stuff I've had to deal with, it does get old. Even more so when even the staff (and their minion) rips on you in public. I do have an understanding of why Mike's attitude became what it became.

Another nice upgrade.
No, it's not an upgrade. It's a security issue.

I was considering bringing it back. Until it was found that a member (and possibly more) were using it to send finical information. Since there's no way to block someone from sending a scanned image of finical info, it's not coming back.

The longer a program exists, the more security issues will be found with it. At some point it becomes easier to replace it than continue to patch because each new patch must be tested to insure that it does not break an older patch, or introduce a new cause of failure. Our old system was that way. Change is the only constant this side of the grave, deal with it!

My comments here are about the site, not you. Don't take them so personal.

Mike, is a whole other issue...

I may be missing something ( I do that a lot) but If you mean FINANCIAL info, WHY ??? can't two members send what ever they want though the pms, that is what PRIVATE MESSAGE is for, how many times have we told members NOT to post what ever ( auction talk, ect.) in the forum but take it to PM, the risk of sending FINANCIAL info by PM is taken by the PMers NOT SS, so why can't we post pics in the PMs

User convenience vs security. This balance needs to be struck in every facet of life. This is the way of the times folks. Any upgrades, downgrades, retrogrades or whatever grades you want to call them are necessary to achieve that balance. Please try to be cogniscant of what needs to be done for site security (and your info's security) vs your personal comfort and convenience using this site. Asking for directions or explanations why the changes took place are just fine but trying to do so while taking pot shots at the admins is counter productive.

My good friend Mike hit the nail on thie head with this statement. "Change is the only constant this side of the grave, deal with it!"

You know, I look at it this way, I do not really like they "NEW" site and I do not spend as much time here as a result. BUT, You guys need to keep something in mind, Chris could just say the he** with it and shut it down altogether and then what will you do. Complain about that? To whom? On what forum?

There's two things at play Ron. Yes private messages are not out there for the world to see. However, they're owned on our database. I do not want ANY financial information being stored here. It's simply a liability we will not assume.

The pic issue opened up this risk to us, but has been expanded into other things that might become an issue.

The short of it is this. Sure I could bring it back into the site. HOWEVER, the system is very "dumb" when it comes to attachments. Attachments are not private in anyway. Even those ones sent in a PM. The system takes the attachment and stores it into the database and gives it an attachment ID. There's no way around that. Now couple this fact to it. With some work, I could find all the attachments someone uploaded here. However I can't say "Oh attachment 'a8fnsbvg' is a picture of a check". Not without physically pulling down every attachment a user posted and viewing them one by one until I find the image in question.

Again, we do not want any financial information stored here on the site. If a user needs to convey sensitive information of that nature, I suggest using a phone or other outside means.

(There are a few other factors that play into this as well that I'm not going to discuss as well)

No one is exempt from this. I can relate.
Heck, I complained about the colors and background from the first hour, but here we are weeks later, and people are still complaining. I feel almost as if I started it, but never dreamed we would still see people complaining today.
Even I am getting tired of hearing it all.

It is what it is. Let's move on...

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but I must ask it(given the explanations above).

Do we need to delete(not allow) any pictures posted that have either financial or personal information in them?

How do we determine what is or is not acceptable to post on the site? (as we were not even aware of the "check" thing).

I swear I am not trying to carry on or anything. Just want to understand. In the past, we all moderate and use the site simply by the rules created and posted and our interpretations of them.

My point about the images is this...

We (the site) want no responsibility of having/keeping any financial information from anyone here. (That's why the upgrade system is powered by Paypal or a payment sent directly to Steel Soldiers LLC) If it's text, I can easily search it out in the database and tend to the data (report/remove) as needed. Images just opens up a different can of worms that is and is not related.

Yes, formally plenty of minions.

Minion= The thoughtless user that clicks on "Thanks" every time a Mod makes a statement, regardless of content.

They have not been as plentiful since the upgrade. No idea why. Maybe the minions have been minced. :3dAngus:

Synonyms: apple-polisher, bootlicker, brownnoser, fawner, flunky (also flunkey or flunkie), lickspittle, suck-up, toady

Or from the Urban Dictionary,
minion

a loyal and unquestioning servent, (usualy small) who does whatever the master asks, no matter what the **** it is. A minion is not considered an equal to anyone is striped of all pride and joy and is repeatedly downtrodden molested and beaten.
my friend made his minion eat his own feet off to show its loyalty.

Personally I hate not being able to send pictures in PM's. I sell things in the classifieds and people often ask for certain pictures that nobody else may care about so I (used to) send them through a PM. With that said I guess I will just have to work around it. Now I have to ask for their e-mail and send them that way. But a question I have is; how are other sites dealing with this issue? Do they just not care about the liability or have they found a safe way around it?

If there was a serious liability issue, Yahoo.com and Gmail.com would have been out of business years ago.

It is a judgement call by an Admin or owner and if they feel it is a liability it is their call. We'll just have to go to our email if we want to send pics or copies of checks sent or money orders for the classifieds as evidence for early shipping.

Seems to me, someone once sent me something like that. I didn't even think about it. I would have shipped just on his say so.

Interesting to note the Private Messages are being read.

Not so private.

While SS taking credit card payments would open the site up to PCI-DSS requirements the reason that Yahoo and Gmail get away with it is that you can't control what an idiot will do with his/her financial information. I do not believe that PCI-DSS will put SS into the food chain if a user scans in his information and sends it in PM.

But the choice is Chris' as owner of the site. If he does not want even the slightest hint of impropriety then leave it alone people and stop complaining.

I've hardly been called a minion (size notwithstanding) or any of the other lacky/bootlicker things that Doghead posted but I would like people to STOP the b!tching at Drew for the upgrade. If you are constantly finding fault with every little thing then find another site to frequent. Eventually all the complaints will weigh on him and he will throw in the towel like our last admin.

I'm growing to like the upgrade since I really like the quick links/today's posts because I see stuff that pops up for sale now.

Call me what you want (like I give a hoot) but Drew is doing a h3ll of a good job.

Steve
