I took mike's advice and installed a glow plug relay. I mounted it right next to the batteries. And it works great! Every CUCV i get in the future will get this mod.

It does not convert, it is a relay.(an electronically activated switch)

The starter relay is triggered by 12v, and it switches 24v(the key switch applies 12V to the relay coil, closing the contacts and the contacts are supplied with 24v and that in-turn goes to the starter solenoid).

If you convert your truck to 12V(all of it), you could leave the relay in ,or you could remove the relay completely and jumper the purple w/white stripe wire to the purple wire. It depends on how you want to(or are told to) do it.

I've upgraded all of my relays - ounce of preparation vs. pound of cure type of thing. My starter relay acted up a couple of times after my CUCV had sat for a month or so and I figured it was better to spend the $10.00 to replace it than wait until I was out in the boonies having to climbe under the truck in a mudhole to jump across the starter terminals with a screwdriver. Went ahead and did the glow plug relay and the two black relays next to the starter relay (Voltmeter and GEN2 light) and the glow plug controller card. In the 28 years I've been working on CUCVs these have been the common parts to fail and I wanted to be sure my truck was reliable since I get out to some pretty remote areas fishing and gold panning. Bought them at CUCV electric (www.cucvelectric.com) and couldn't be happier. Good Heavy-duty American made stuff. Read their guides and stuff too. For instance, they have free troubleshooting info, corrections to the Army manuals (like the proper wiring info for the starter relay) and so on. I have no connection with them - just sharing what for me has been a great parts source.

Hello Swinters,

After the last time the old stock starter relay fried my starter.
I replaced the starter, the fuisble link wire, etc., both batteries, both alternators, both of those small square under dash relays, with relays I got from cucvelectric, and got a glow plug controller card from cucvelectric too, also replaced the glow plug relay, cleaned
every electrical contact in my cab and engine compartment I could find with the red, white,
and black can of eletrical contact cleaner, and finally did the Doghead Starter Relay mod myself, also added a 24v solargizer to keep both batteries topped off...

After all that, I have not had a starting problem since, it has become very reliable,
and runs strong and sure. So I am very happy with it now...

Now I can move on to the other issues on the to do list for my M1009.
