Very hot resistor....why?

Well,after trying to start up today after standing for 3 weeks,the batts were flat.So I slaved it.All good,it started.A bit of squeeling belt and relay chatter later.Smoke pouring out the open hood.Switched off and quickly disconnected the batts.The top post of the relay was smoking.Luckily no wires burnt.Took out the relay and put in the original stock relay.Started up and "hey presto" all ok and charging properly and no hot resistor.I did check the other relay before fitting it (that caught fire) that it did not earth out to the body.Lucky escape there.

my relay chatters also after the last glow. Did I miss the place where this chatter has been explained?
I also must have missed relay chatter explanation. After I replaced my card and GP relay recently now she really chatters. Do not remember it being as noticeable before? Please tell me all is well...

Went out this morn to start the beast and lo and behold it wouldn't start.Wait light was doing it's thing but no start.So I pulled the card and there is one component burnt out.i might try and get it repaired as no one will export one from your side of the pond.In the mean time I have installed a manual switch.Also bypassed the resistor.Starts great now.

Thank you for the excellent video. That is the best explanation of the CUCV glow plug system I have ever seen. I have a few questions.
1.) The after glow will not work with the ballast resistors bypassed?
2.) The chatter is the voltage being reduced to the glow glug relay and the magnetic pull releasing from the internal studs?
I have repaired numerous CUCV's that have been mutilated and bypassed over the past 15 years. The best one was a farmer yesterday that had a glow plug threaded in a bracket at the ash tray. He pushed a button and when the glow plug at the ash tray was red he started the truck. Well that was fine till the wife and son's girlfriend went to use the truck and held the button to long. The glow plug exploded and showered them with HOT shards of metal. One on her face. This she told me yesterday at the market when she saw me drive in. She saw my CUCV and was asking me if I knew anything about them. She said the truck still runs but they must use either to start it. I gave her my number and they called last night. I am going over to look at it today. I will keep you informed if you would like to hear more.

OK I am back to tell what I have seen with old McDonalds farm truck. He has swelled the glow plugs and has 2 in each head that he can not get out. I tried a little advise but he was insistent to keep spraying them with PB blast. His wife was chattering away at him about fixing it or junking it. He has had a ton of issues with it not starting. The fuel system was wet in the right front wheel well and the valley of the engine is laying with fuel. He was open for advise. I looked and he had both back plugs on each side hanging by the bulge in the plug. I tried to remove them with a puller and they are very tight. I was afraid to break them off. He ask what he should do. I told him to remove the front wheels and take the inner fenders out. I would be back tomorrow. I helped him for a while and then left. He had the right inner fender out when I left. He was pretty handy and knew his way around tools and how to use them. He claimed to be a poor mechanic on diesels. He said the truck ran good for 2 years and only gave him starting problems in the past 3 months. It would start and run a few seconds and shut off. Then he would have to crank it till the batteries were almost dead to get it to start. (dropping fuel) In the past month he did the glow plug system by passed as his neighbor suggested. He said it did not help the starting problem but if he sprayed either at it and it would start anytime. But it would shut off and start easier after the first time. He blamed the neighbor and had lots of stories of why he was crazy to let him work on his truck. Apparently the neighbor has no reverse in his Ford and the clutch is shot. Anyway he said he should have known better then to let him touch it. I will get some more news tomorrow..
