I’m just gonna let the motor cool down and replace all of the injectors with the new set I have.

I poked around the exhaust manifold before messing with the injectors and heard no tapping sounds.

What a disaster 😔

I think what cucvrus was suggesting earlier about the exhaust manifold - with a cool motor - was to check the bolts. Just reach down and put a wrench on those bolts and see if they are tight / snug. The ones that connect the manifold to the block.

The other possibility is on the bottom of the exhaust manifold where the exhaust pipe connects. I would GUESS that one side or the other could be making that clicking (most likely not both -but who knows). That exhaust click sounds just like the guts of the motor is making then noise - but it isn't. More often than not that is where a leak will develop...

You didn't hear anything under the valve covers, probably not a push rod or your valve train. You didn't listen around the lower end around the oil pan, but the noise seems like it is from the upper end somewhere. You have a rebuilt injection pump, I don't know if you may have an issue with you pump, maybe someone else can advise you better on that possibility. Your fuel injection timing marks or still where you placed them. New injectors would either fix it or rule out that possibility. There is always a silver lining in every one of lives difficulties. Some way some how good will come out of this.

I’ll go over it again and check everything, but I’m going to replace the injectors also just to rule that out. Don’t wanna sound crazy but the injectors on there now were rebuilt with Japanese parts and I kinda had a bad feeling about them from the start. I wanna get that stuff out of the truck.
I’ve seen so many videos on the internet about finding exhaust leaks from spraying water and watching for bubbles to sticking a leaf blower in the tail pipes and watching for air coming out the other end lol. So I was wanting to know the technique I should use. I’ll go over all the bolts like you said.
I just want the darn thing to be right so I can finally enjoy it after all this work! I gotta stay positive!

Yes sir! Those other ways are pretty good too - especially the blower - if you have extra eyes or hands around to help. SAFETY GLASSES are a must though. Rust chips are bad for the motor but even worse in your eyes! Gotta be careful with cold water on a hot manifold so you don't create a crack...

When I put the stethoscope on the IP I didn’t hear any knocking, it was just a smooth whistling sound. I really hope I don’t have to tear that thing out again. I seem to be cursed with this darn tapping issue. My other 1008 does the same exact thing and it also just developed randomly while driving.
I just started it and recorded this clip.

Thing that’s crazy is that both trucks run perfectly fine and don’t seem to be suffering any performance issues or anything. The sound is just really annoying and kind of embarrassing because it sounds like the motor is about to throw a rod or something. Here’s a clip of me cruising through Utah at 73mph just fine. That GVOD is a real amazing piece of equipment. The motor is fairly quiet even at that speed so I really don’t think this happened from pushing it too hard or anything.

Sounds good, that might be some kind of clue. Looks like your just coming out of the Imperial Valley. I just noticed you said Utah. My truck never runs that quiet. Very impressive.

Yeah I absolutely love this truck, especially after the last 2 months of work I put into it. Even with the tapping sound it didn’t let me down once during that 2200 mile drive. I went through miles of scorching desert where there was no cell service or any other people around for miles. I didn’t even have any tools or a spare tire so a break down would’ve been terrible. But she got me home just fine!

I would drain all the oil,smell it for diesel, or any burnt smell, feel it for any abrasives,and refill it with fresh oil and filter. Your do for an oil change anyway.

Looks like a lot of carbon buildup. One of them seems to have a lot less.
Yeah I thought so too. The guy who rebuilt the pump said he turns the fuel up on them. I wonder if that contributed to this. I started it up with just the first 4 injectors changed and it’s still tapping.. gonna take a break and do the rear 4 and try again.

Will definitely be interesting to see what happens with the other 4.
The sad part is if the clicking disappears, you have to put those four back in - one by one to find the problem.
Fuel turned up shouldn't be causing the clicking sound you hear...

Yeah I don't think turning up the fuel is the way to go. He should of asked you if that's what you wanted. It can be turned down by removing the cover on the injection pump and turning a screw I believe. I don't think it is a big deal but I have not researched how it is done. I you want some good fuel injection return lines go to Amazon and type in G.M. universal premium viton diesel return line kit , blendoor is the seller. 6' of hose 20 clamps and two plugs. It's the best I've used yet

Well good news guys, I think the problem is fixed. I just did the two rear injectors on the left side (5&7) and the hammer tapping sound seems to be gone. I didn’t run it too long so the motor wouldn’t get too hot. I’m about to change 6&8 now also for good measure. I don’t really care to keep those injectors in my truck at all anyway. My dad is an old school diesel guy mostly with semi trucks and he was looking at the injectors I pulled out next to the new ones and he was saying the holes on the denso nozzles looked bigger than the Bosch. And he may not be right, but he was thinking they may have been over fueling the motor because I was also getting black smoke along with the tapping. Either way I’m just happy that I figured out the problem (I THINK). I will get these last two injectors installed and post a video.
here’s a picture of the Bosch side by side with the denso. I wiped some of the carbon off the denso so you can see it better.

Well it seems it was all wishful thinking and hoping 😞 The tapping is still there after installing a complete set of new injectors. Seems quieter but still there. I guess I’ll have to keep messing with it.
I was told it could be a collapsed lifter but the truck was perfect snd it started out of nowhere while on the road. Wouldn’t that be something caused from the truck sitting for a long time not being ran?
I still feel like this is fuel related because I can feel and hear the knocking on the injector lines more than anywhere else. Could this be an IP issue? I started getting black smoke on the drive home, but I initially thought it was from having to keep on the throttle to keep speed on uphill climbs on the highways because after I’d get over the hills and let off the throttle it would stop. But now I notice that even when I’m driving on the street if I give it a good amount of throttle it will give off black smoke.
Can it be the guy turned the fuel up too high on the IP or the timing is off?
If I can’t figure this out I guess I’ll just keep driving it until the motor goes. It’s just really sad and disheartening after all the time and money I’ve put into this truck.
I guess I could just start trying different additives, also. I dunno.
