What are the two items on the gauge cluster at 10 and 2 o'clock from speedometer?

What are the two items on the gauge cluster at 10 and 2 o'clock from speedometer? They have a singular electrical connection, but I see no function. The unit we have has these painted.

I believe you are refering to the dash lights. There should be a light bulb in each of them that will back light the gauges when you have the lights turned on. The operator manual will show you how to turn them on.

Ok the tops of them are painted over. Do they back shoot behind the mounting panel to back light the gauges?

Yes, if you unscrew them you'll see that they are actually a clear red plastic

Ok, here are some pictures of what we have. I see a dark piece of plastic behind the sealing gasket. Is this what you are refering to?

Yes. The dark plastic is the lense. They can be red, green or blue plastic. Also, yours have been melted from the bulbs being to high of wattage. This was a common problem with the early series hmmwv. I believe a MWO was assigned to replace them with a lower wattage bulb. The bulb is inside the plastic and you unscrew the plastic housing from the metal base. However, when melted, it will break so it is best to obtain an new assembly. Hmmwv dash light asssemblies (plastic portion) are a different length than other M-series dash lights, so finding a replacement might take several attempts. Measure your plastic lense so you know what length you need from supplier.

While the dash is out, clean the ground on fire wall behind heater switch and use star washers on both sides of bolt.

Ok I got it unscrewed and it's a very dark green. I plan to do a bench test and see what the bulb is doing. I'm assuming this is a positive lead at the bottom with a chassis ground.
