I tell ya, if it isn't one thing it's another. On the way home from our property tonight I had to hit the brakes pretty hard to stop when someone come around a corner way too fast and the tranny started making noises. Pulled over to the side of the road to look into it and there's a lot of clicking type sounds, kinda like you're trying to put it in park while moving. It would move forward and back, but wouldn't shift. Even putting it in park would get the noise. Made a call to be towed home and when we got there all was quiet, even switching between gears while sitting still, and it moved under it's own power to park it out of the way.
I'm hoping when I drop the pan on Wednesday I find the linkage apart, or loose. I can't afford this right now. aua
Ok to add to this, can a bad torque converter be, for a better lack of words, random? After searching YouTube I found some bad torque converter videos that sounded a lot like what I heard yesterday. At one point after the problems started and before I got a tow it did drive on it's own quietly, but limited speed.Then to no movement and crazy noisy. Then before I parked it last night quiet and moved fine, same today.
I've never had any torque converter problems as long as I've been driving so I'm stumped.

When my torque converter broke, it locked up and wouldn't allow the vehicle to idle in gear. I swapped mine and the trans has been fine ever since (with new oil and filter). That was 3 years ago.


Maybe start a thread on it with those videos as examples?

This filter on the TH400 has been a "problem child" for years. If they are not secured properly the filter will "flop" allowing the rubber seal to come loose on the "pick-up tube". This causes the oil pump to suck air and loose prime and pressure for a few moments. It also can cause the vehicle to loose all gears. No Go ! I would secure that filter and then run it. Hopefully the oil pump was not damaged. The noise you mentioned would be coming from that oil starved oil pump. It would be howling !
If your truck runs after this, then put a pressure tester on the transmission and make sure the pump is still putting out the proper pressure. If not then your looking at a total rebuild.

Thanks, rusty. I just picked up a filter and fluid an am making a spacer that fits correctly to secure the filter. It acted fine last night so I'll take it out for a drive when I get her back together. I know someone who has a rebuilt th400 but it came out of a car, I don't know if the tail shaft is the same without the housing on it. I believe it is a short tail though.

Woke up to my truck running poorly would idle high then push air and go back to normal...i thought the gas guage was lying so I put 10 Gallons in it....didnt help..checked miscellaneous things under the hood and got about 1/8 to 1/4 turn tightened on my spin on filter...restarted and the truck stalled after firing it back up...never had that happen before in the 7 years of ownership. After cranking it with the pedal to the floor it started again. I **** the truck down and it starts as it should but It's getting exhaust work done by someone else so I didn't have time to test it on the road..i hope it fixes the issue, has anyone else gone through this?

So after two nose starts today at fired up fine and brought me to work without any stumbling or complaints go figure

Volvo, sounds like it might be sucking air somewhere. Might be time to replace rubber hose in bent areas. I have replaced most problem areas with either fittings, steel or copper tube. You have to have some hose but you can reduce some of the problems.

I start having warning signs and I put on clear hose at the return line on the injector pump and see how many little bubbles are coming through. If there are bubbles, then I go to problem areas and replace them first. Good Luck air gremlins are a PAIN.

+1 on the clear line where possible. I changed mine out with a clear yellow line that we run on snowmobiles, it doesn't get hard and stays clear. Makes it so easy to see any bubbles. That was the first place I looked when I had problems with the stock filter base.

On another note, my tranny problem seems to be fixed. I'm assuming the panic stop flopped the filter and it stayed till I hit another bump during the tow. I made a spacer to go over the filter bolt so it's nice and tight so I won't have these problems again. Put about 10 miles on it, tranny is quiet, shifts are nice and firm and no slippage, so I'm calling it fixed.

Outstanding! I am glad it was so simple yet a pain in the ass. Now you have piece of mind knowing that it is fixed properly.

On the other hand now you have to wonder what else the prior owner "has fixed".

I forgot to ask if there was a magnet in pan.

Well I torqued the big ass fuel filter as tight as I could get it and drove it to work and home without any hiccups, napa has my filter and pump for 50 dollars for the pair...i checked all the lines and fittings and everything seems to be in order, I will keep the new parts in an ammo box on board for future issues if they arise...i think 8 hours of sitting would be enough for a pressure drop if it was going to happen again....im making a mental not to mark a line from the filter base to the filter to be able to see if it loosens up in the future.

Yes, thanks again. I honestly couldn't believe how much noise it made from what was in the end, a simple problem. I may end up having more issues down the road from the lack of fluid getting to the pump for that short while but for now it feels really good.

I as well am glad it was simple. The pain in the ass part for me was me being stressed out wondering if I'm gonna need a new tranny or now. I'm not generally an auto guy, I don't like 'em so that kinda adds to it. I can't believe the PO could have found something even a bit more suitable to use as a spacer. Even a piece of pipe and hacksaw would have done it. Easy for me with micrometer and lathe to make a good one that fits like GM should have used in it. And I do know it wont go anywhere. The magnet was still there, actually a bit surprised lol.
PO fixes, well....been through a bunch of them already unfortunately and I'm sure I'll find more before I'm done. Everything from cobbed together exhaust to frigged up axle shaft that I have yet to replace. Also non working horn and BO switches missing, and noticed today the front axle pinion bearing is loose :-(

As much of a pain that it is now, in the end, you will have a much better truck and the pride knowing you made it that way.
Plus all the automotive knowledge you will accumulate as you fix everything.

As they say....., it's definitely a labor of love.

Yes and take your time I have to do that with my truck and I still drive it every day too.

Coming weekend I may need to tow a 4500-5000 kg Magirus campertruck, but I hope my buddy can get bloody thing running.
To get rolling with a towbar is not the problem, it's the stopping.

Also going to browse for tires, the 33x12.5x16.5 size seems to be made out of unobtainium, but maybe a tire shop in Belgium might have 2. Problem is, they don't do business over Phone or e-mail, so a personal visit is needed for price negotiation if they have them.

I would not see that the radiator problem is solved........you have just pushed it a bit away......sorry, no offense
