This is from a few days ago, I was pretty happy to hear it run for the first time in over five years. But, like the link reads, throttle shaft is toast. Gotta get that straightened out before I can move forward.

So, today was a slow day. I took the cushions off the seat frames and cleaned them off, mostly. Pretty sure some sort of bed liner material was sprayed on them last, makes for a big mess. 20200502_112041.jpg20200502_173437.jpg

What you do on a day when the big projects are basically on hold for whatever reason. Made a beauty plate to cover up the cluster of holes in the dash and cleaned up the seat frame chains. About tht chain finish, the "gold" tone might just be cadmium plating, it's a relatively cheap anti-corrosion dip commonly used for steel parts.

I think that's right, anybody back that up?
You are correct, I was informed that they were either cadmium or zinc plated. Don't know why I didn't think of that to start with. Part of my job is plating....

Man, it's been a headache the last few days. Messing with the mechanical fuel pump, it works off the block just fine. Mount it, no pressure at all. Of course, initially I had it plumbed in reverse! In my defense, I'm so used to having the inlet facing the rear of the vehicle, that's how I set it up. And since there wasn't a mechanical pump on it when I got it, I didn't know any different.

Anyways, after too much frustration, the electric pump went back on. But, unlike the previous installer, I put it underneath the body. Pumps like to push, not pull, and it was mounted up high on the firewall before. Surprised it never burnt itself out.

I'm not really surprised at the fact of the original lines are all still on it. So, let's use em! Yes, I'll run some fuel through it before I hook it up to the block to get all/any crud out of the lines. And for now, I plumbed it for the CJ tank until I can get the big tank completely finished up.

And the original shut off valve (minus the handle) was still attached, so let's clean that up! Works too, may need some graphite packing, won't know until I put fuel through it. And I need to fab up a handle, I have the donor piece, just gotta do a little cutting/welding/make it pretty. 20200513_172411.jpg

If I'm not mistaken that is the First Corollary of the Standardized Wadsworth Theorem:

- If there's a 50/50 chance for the proper direction of installation for ANY item

- And you are unsure of that proper direction

- You WILL install it in the wrong direction

Atmospheric pressure, lunar cycles, and the day of the week are all Corollary variables, but generally the Corollary holds true.

New carb on, fuel fittings sealed and not drippy, radiator flushed and filled (it has a leak naturally), it starts and runs on it's own now with no hesitation. Good oil pressure, holds around 25 or so once it warmed up. Probably going to get a new exhaust setup. Again, the hack job by the PO leaks and is annoying. I have to get used to the choke cable actually pulling the throttle at full extension too. In all, I'm pleased, and have a lot to do before I go back to work in one more week.

The bad, now all of a sudden my right turn signals have stopped working and my dimmer switch doesn't want to function....so now I have to chase down those issues too.

The rear main is way leaky. I'd hoped it wouldn't be the case, but I knew it may happen since I disturbed the seals when I had to realign the timing marks. I should have known better and just did it then and avoided all this, but I didn't. So this morning I pulled the pan back off, oil looked good, rear main bearing was clean, so now it's wait for a pan gasket and put it back together and cross your fingers I don't have to do this again!

This was my #4 piston when I tore it down a few years ago, crazy galling, never seen a chunk wad up like that. Every piston had broken rings too. It was crazy, except for #4, they all had good compression!

It runs again, still leaks too. Starting to think that the small chunk of missing block is the culprit. Of course, I can't tell without pulling the engine back out.

This is after roughly 15 minutes of run time. I realize it's not easy to discern just how much is there since there's floor-dri down, but this is not acceptable to have oil just coming out like it does. 20200530_143738.jpg

On a positive note, I finally put a timing light on it and got it dialed in so it runs nice and smooth, no valve train clatter which is amazing since I cold set them during assembly. New carb will take some getting used to, choke setting isn't even close to what it used to do.

Got a new air horn and had to fab up an adapter to the breather. Routed the crankcase hose a little farther back since there was only a giant hose there now.20200530_183347.jpg

Well, pulled the engine back out tonight. Looks like the upper rear main seal tried to come out the back. Wish I'd have noticed it two weeks ago when I had the pan off. Oh well, what do you do?20200610_192142.jpgreceived_187963505899183.jpeg

1) Grab a beer. Cry in it. Finish the beer.

2) Fill a tall glass with cool clear water.

3) Drink it down.

4) Roll up the sleeves, walk back into the garage, and go to work!

All Good!!
1. Not a beer fan, but I'll cry in a jar of moonshine and take a few pulls from that.
2. I'll make sure it's full of ice first.
3. Definitely and refill a few times.
4. I'll look funny if I roll up my sleeves beings they're short, and I don't smoke, so it just wouldn't be right. I need new seals before I can get back to work ;)
