Who has shovel, axe and basic tool set?

Outstanding response to my pioneer tool needs / request. I found a good picture at: Pioneer Tool Rack and Tools and an excellent description of sizes and such. If this guy isn't a SS member he certainly qualifies! I am going to buy these tools locally and make the shorter if needed just so they will somehow fit in the tool rack and paint them green... maybe stencil US Army on them too! Then I'm gonna pray that I never have to unstrap them out in the boonies unless it's to chase off snakes.

Here's my Pioneer tool rack.

I used a fiberglass shovel for mine, and painted it OD. It was a bit too long for the rack, so I ground down the rivet/bolt that holds the handle on, cut down the shaft and just used a bolt to fasten the handle back on.

It works for me, and it's on a bobbed Deuce. So it's not like I was entering it in a show lookin to win any "Authentic Awards" with it anyhow.

99.999% of the people that see your truck will never know the difference between what came in the rack originally and what didn't, anyways. Plus you have a shovel, if you ever need it.

The problem with the pioneer tools is that the racks were designed for US spec dimensions and a lot of tools now are made in China, and are not the correct measurements. You can put whatever tools you want in the rack since nothing is brand specific, but...
The US mandate for military equipment is that it be manufactured in the US.
So Here is what I found to make my truck as correct as I could make it.

Now if you are Cheap, then don't read further, because these tools are expensive. However, I believe you get what you pay for.

The axe company is Council Tool. Current USGI Manufacturer. I'm sure there are others.
I got a beat up take off from a HMMWV rack; It had a cracked handle so I bought a new one.

The Pick Mattocks, I have were made by Woodings Verona Tool, in PA, and were bought up by Ames. Along with many other companies.
I have two that were never used. One came on my truck, and one I bought at Aberdeen. Very well made, and all stamped with US.
5 lbs. #6 eye width.
You can buy the handles from Council Tool as well. Since there is no one source, you could probably buy the Pick mattock from Council as well. US made.

Ames True Temper shovels, are no longer made to the US dimensions and I couldn't find a source to buy an Ames True Temper shovel.
Instead I bought a Union Tools shovel which was made in the US, and was the correct fit, along with the plastic D handle. The ames true temper does have a Black plastic D handle.

Many years ago, back in the 80's the company I worked for sold these items to AM General. We shipped axes and shovels by True Temper, pick mattocks by Woodings and Warwood, pick handles by Railway, and assorted other tools for the wreckers by Woodings and Warwood. Shipped both painted (383) and unpainted. Still have an original axe and pick mattock. Lost the shovel in the divorce . The company still supplys a number of items to BAE and Uncle Sam.

Walmart in my area has shovels that are almost Identicat to gi issue. Mabey the Chinese copied one for the production run.

They or a hardware store has axes also. You just have to pick the correct one.

A hardware store will have the pick also. There again you have to pick the correct style.

I don't care if they are original or authentic... in fact I'd prefer a fiberglass axe handle and shovel handle... unbreakable!

Take it from someone who uses shovels every day -- fiberglass shatters -- I prefer wood hanles. Just keep them painted so they don't rot and they will last a long time. Plus they look better. Steel is also good if you have them fabricated.

I did not know fiberglass would do that! Guess that shows the strength I put into my axe blows! Well I found a shovel and pick at WalMart for like 30 bucks and the Axe (with fiberglass handle) at Tractor Supply for about $20. All fit in the rack just fine so I may leave them natural wood and black steel or paint them green-ish with my 3 cans of matching camo paint (Krylon). My wife thought I was crazy for showing her my new tools! She said the first time I try to dig that "thing" out of the mud with a shovel and pick I'd be wishing I'd bought one with the winch! How true, how true!

Another caution of fiberglass shovels. If you are tending a JW4X4 fire with them, they will melt.

I am about to do an estate recovery in NJ (from TX) and know that my dad had many "antiques" in their basement. (My mom passed in April 2009, dad in May 1993.) I'll be flying there soon and hauling via Budget Truck various heirlooms, furniture, etc. Needless to say, my sisters see no "value" in Dad's antiques, but I recall many OD pieces - inluding a pick, axe, shovel, and possibly even the Rack!!!

There are also many iron tools, field gear, and post-WWII Panama Canal memorabilia to fuel my current MV interests.

We'll see what I find and recover!
