I purchased my civilian Slantback H1 on FleaBay for $35k. (Same price I paid for my M1025, and yes, I own twins). I just added a Whipple Supercharger to the H1. I have a lot to work on and shake out BUT it is the same with any FMV also.

I call the Vermont DMV and I will post this information for those following my saga.

They stated I will NOT be receiving a traditional title. Vermont does not issue titles for vehicles older than 2008. Instead, your registration acts as your title. When you sell the older vehicle, you give the buyer a bill of sale and your registration acts as a title. Some states may be unaware of this and they refer those states to the DMV web site: https://dmv.vermont.gov/tax-title/vehicle-title

Also the DMV told me I can "gift" the vechile to my established LCC. That way when your local friendly Florida LEO pulls me over for having out-of-state plates, as they love to do here in the Sunshine State, your registration does not have your name on it and you can have it registered under an address in Vermont using the LLC's "Virtual" mailbox I lease. Sure, they could still to decide to cite you, impounding your car, or arrest me but at least I can fight it in court. Gifting it to the LLC saves me having to pay the sales tax again. I just submit two forms, the VD-119, VT-013, along with a copy of your officially executed LLC from the state it was established. The LLC does NOT have to be established in Vermont. Since I have a Florida LLC already established and I have done out-of-state business in the past, I'm establishing an office in Vermont! He also confirmed the plates will be coming in a few weeks.

So I guess I'm good. I can sell it, but I want to keep it and try the above plan. Hoping for the best and planning for the worst! Too bad Florida has turned into another bureaucratic heaven. Gone are the days that they were nice and helpful. I guess the same can be said of much of this country
I believe what the DMV told you is only partially true. If the vehicle is greater than 15 years old they do not issue titles unless you fill out the required additional form for the title. This will almost certainly require a VIN verification. The required form is found on the Vermont DMV website. The young lady at the DMV offered the form to me when I registered my truck. I declined because I did not need a title.

Glad to hear you got it registered and you no longer feel you must sell your new "toy".

I received a check in the mail from the DMV refunding the Title Fee I paid, and the Warranty Fee, whatever that is. So that confirms that they would not give me the title even though I requested it and I sent in the VIN verification form but from Florida. I don't blame them for not accepting and out-of-state form.

I filed for a new LLC in Vermont today, and obtained a Vermont "business" address. My wife constantly reminds me how much $ we are sinking into this, but now I am on a mission and I am don't give up that easy. All that will cost me about $400 a year or so to maintain. :censored: Takes about another month for Vermont to process the LLC and then I can try gifting the HUMVEE to the LLC and if the DMV actually issues a new registration with a real Vermont address, and without my name on the registration. That should give any Florida LEO pause when they pull me over asking for "papers please", at least I hope.

Wife suggests a "Bernie Bro" bumper sticker, but I refuse!

Next item of concern would be changing the insurance, as that still has my name and Florida address on it. May just let that be as it probably opens a whole new can of worms!

Meanwhile, I am still waiting for the plate so I can take it for the first real ride. Only a month in! I sit back and continue to invent new dirty words for these Florida DMV bureaucrats.

I might be missing something but ownership of the vehicle will not matter if you get pulled over. If LEO questions a valid registration/plate ; you and your DL # get cited. A parking violation or toll nonpayment would be written to a tag but I can't think of anything else.

Now I expect that to be so way down on the list I would not worry about being pulled over with a valid unexpired Vermont plate. I do think you are over worrying about this. Drive and have fun with your new toy.

When a vehicle is transferred out of state with a registration only in a state that requires a title they are obligated with the agreements/compacts to accept the registration and issue a title if they so require it in that state. My son bought an older Jeep Cherokee from Maine that does not issue titles to older vehicles. Louisiana accepted it and had to issue a LA title and registration after they collected their gold coins....and surrendered the plate with the original registration.

take all this with a grain of salt, FWIW & YMMV

This has been going on for quite a while and seems so complex..What in words of one syllable is happening to your attempt at registration in your state? Win or lose?.

  • Registering in my home state of Florida - Total FAIL, where the FL DMV marked up the title I got from the seller as invalid due to bureaucrats running amuck - not FL law.
  • Registering in Vermont - win if you are patient. I am on the 6th week waiting for a plate.
  • Getting a clean Vermont Title - fail, VT does not issue titles for anything older than 2008. Somehow I am supposed to use my registration as a title. How am I supposed to advertise it as "clean title in hand" should I ever sell it?

Just sayin'...
Yeah, except that one is 10's of thousands more than I paid for the one I have.

Several states do not issue titles for vehicles over a certain age. They issue registrations only.

I recently purchased a MV that came with a New York registration and a bill of sale (no title). My local DMV had no issues accepting the out of state registration in lieu of a title and giving me a valid Texas title as the vehicle’s new owner. The process was easy and I’d gladly do it again.

@FlameRed , Sir, I know you have been very focused on getting a valid title. However, you may have all the needed documentation with a valid Vermont registration. If you are looking to sell the vehicle, I suggest stating something to the effect of, “Comes with a valid Vermont registration in lieu of a title. Vermont does not title vehicles over __ years old.” I’ve seen people make similar statements on this site when selling vehicles.

Yep that guy could come along and claim the truck .
I don't think so. VT's documents supersede that old title. Presumably, the VT issuing agency notified the existing titling authority about the title change.

Even if not, current owner has a physical copy of the released title in his possession.

The previous owner hypothetically claiming it would be similar to some previous owner that had a physical duplicate copy of any previous superceded title trying to claim it.

It can still turn into a expensive legal nightmare . On top of no insurance in the LLC's name .
