M1008 kicks off a helluva day!

So my daily driver 08 which I named Warpig gave me a fantastic start to the week. Woke up this Monday morning, got ready for work and fed the local animal crew. Went out to start the truck to warm up and let the chickens out to find something, prolly a coon, had pried the coop door open and killed a laying hen.... Despite my shooting well over 75 of the things last fall/winter/spring. So I hop in the truck after takin my lab out and head for work. Make it about 2.5 miles and low coolant light starts to flicker, staying on longer and longer. PO replaced voltmeter with a coolant temp guage, rather know if I'm gonna blow a motor than if my alts are charging anyway. Within about 30 seconds temp began to climb above 210 slowly. I cranked the defroster a on and it stabilized. As I was trying to make it to a gravel (blacktop very narrow and no shoulder) the temp shot up and at around 230 I shut it down and neutral and tried to coast to gravel, coming up short.

So now I'm thrilled and 3 miles from home. Pop hood and see coolant sprayed below and around water pump but on that road with 40+ mph winds and cold I called the old lady and told her to come get me. Get home and call the wrecker and sheriff pulls in the driveway, tellin me it has to be moved NOW and he has to stay with it until its gone. Get a wrecker on the way, had to send it to the shop cuz I do t have the impact tools to get the fan and clutch off the pump down at my current location. Sounds like its gonna run about 500 to get her running again. All this while trying to save for my first child on the way.

Try to head to work in the backup Durango, battery stone dead.

Sorry for the rant, love my 08 but blah! What a day.

He was with me today! Flat tire on the way to work in the work van! Took me longer to access the jack and tools due to the shelving and bins added to the van then to change the tire. Put the spare on and stopped after work and had 4 tires put on $745 down the drain!! Got 70,000 miles out of the old set so its not to bad. Plus the hockey puck lock froze closed and the torch was in the van locked up due to the frozen lock had to buy a lighter at 7-11 to thaw the lock to open it. Just another day in paradise as Phil Colins would say!!!

Should be a LOT less if you are able to do the work yourself.

Yea I hated to pay that. Shop charged me 140 for the water pump, so it was prolly a 100 dollar part and 30 bucks of antifreeze. Unfortunately I don't have a garage, and its dark by the time I get home from work. Also don't have all my good tools down here, just some basics. **** I need a personal shop, coulda just put 370 bucks towards it on one DIY repair alone.

This post is about 5 years old, but more in price range I was thinking. I paid $35.00 for a new water pump from Autozone with lifetime guarantee for a Civy Ford V8 in November. (they had cheaper, but not LT guar)

Have a bunch of these I was gonna list on Eekbay and the like, but I
thought I'd offer them here first. I have a bunch of NOS factory water
pumps for M1008/M1009 CUCV series of trucks. Most of the boxes busted
open in storage, but the water pumps are great condition. Would sell
for $25 ea plus shipping if any of you guys need them. Let me know, thanks.

Whoa! - I am NOT Mike - That is an OLD post I found by someone named Mike - just giving iacucv idea of what NOS pump goes for. It is 5 year old post. For comparison also I gave him price I paid for new - not rebuilt Ford pump in November 2012.
It is not current- 5 years expired, so I think I am in compliance with rules.

I had a similar start to my week last week. My Dodge 2500 is down, so I've been driving the M1008 Hyrailer to work. She won't start Monday morning. Ok, fire up the M936 and move it over, slave it off, no problem. Well, in the pitch dark, I don't put the wrecker back all the way. This comes back to haunt me. So I get to my gate, get out, open it, get back in, get back out to close the gate behind me, and I here hsssssssss from the rear driver tire. Great... The hyrail truck takes special tires, so I don't have a spare rim or tire. So I back it back up in the yard. Decide to take the M109. Well, I didn't put the wrecker back all the way, missed it by a foot or two in the dark. Backed up the M109, and BAM! there is now an indention in the back of the box on the pass side shaped like the side of a wrecker vise...

I feel your pain. When it rains sometimes its a flood. And when Murphy comes calling...

Is the 1008 track width modified? I thought 1008 wheels spaced too far for rails.
You ever run it on rails?

yes, and it has special rims and tires to ride on the rails. It was modified by the Army and used at Ft. Stewart, GA on the base railroad there. Me and EMD567 co-own it.

Before I would pay 5 hundred dollars to someone to replace a water pump I would buy the tools just to make sure they didn't " ever " have the chance to clip me again. That is just out of the ball park for replacing a water pump on a truck that old . Could you see their face or were they wearing mask .............

I have the tools... They're just 250 miles away. Need my truck running so gotta spend the money, most other things I could tackle but didnt have the impact for the fan/clutch removal. In a rental country house with a shady garage and an even shadier neighbor kid well known for thievery. Ain't movin my many thousands of dollars worth of tools into a temporary dwelling for them to weather, if not stolen!

I have done without it! Tightened the fan belt lots, so it didn't slip, and load of engine was holding pump from turning much. Put a box wrench on bolt, few whams with my trusty ball peen, came loose. Used wrench on one bolt and jammed against the next to turn pump pulley & fan to best spot to get next bolt. Left 2nd to last engaged a few threads so I could turn pulley in best position to get last bolt loose

$500 sounds about right. According to Alldata: the water pump on a 6.2 rates in at around 5 hours. So you figure shop time somewhere around $75-100/hr and your in the $500 range.

I need to replace mine. It's leaking just a little bit (haven't had to even top off the reservoir), I bought the water pump this summer, then replaced my seeping mechanical fuel pump with an electric one, and then there was no leaking...but it was only temporary.

As an FYI, I believe a new GM water pump from the dealer is really expensive...around $180 with an employee discount if I remember correctly. I got a Delco for around $65 I think.
