So the question is, are we going to be getting some kind of notification asking for compliance from the DMV or are we expected to report how we have complied? Most of what I've read is worded in such a way as to address people who use their vehicles for business, not for personal use.

There is a reason for trying to reduce smog levels.

Thank you very much... Very informative. I am not sure if I will bid on one now. 2015 will be here soon. I know local truckers are in a panic, and it will cost them dearly to replace their engines. Some of the M923A2's were built in 1989, so Historical license might be the ticket. Replacing the engine is not an option for me.

Moto4forlife: From what I understand, it is up to the owners, they are supposed to report their fleet to CARB and what you are doing for compliance. How they will do the enforcement and subsequent fines is unknown to me. Fleet consist of How many commercially used and/or registered trucks over 14,000lbs Mfg GVWR operated within the state, it also applies to commercial trucks registered out of state operated within CA.

Maxtor: I have also heard from other members having success with using contract order year for the year of the truck on their SF97 and subsequent tile and registration here in CA, since the contract date is earlier, it is usually on a data plate in the contract number.

Out of state truckers should REFUSE to haul into Ca. when the new smog laws become effective, rather then put new low efficient engines in their trucks, commerce would come to a halt in/out of Ca., won't take long before Ca. would HAVE to back down, the state would be LOSING millions a day, not counting the hardship the people and business would be facing, let the people see what the tree huggers are doing for them

73m819: Without getting to political I will say in my opinion for several reasons it is wrong that the law is retroactive, I can understand New equipment having to comply to Slowly ever increasing cleaner standards.

If you think these trucks are so clean wait until the public sees trucks regularly doing a regenerations. They look like they are on fire with all the smoke they spew

Some have suggested that the out of state truckers will drop their trailers just outside of the state and trucks with the 2010 and newer engines will take the trailer from there. This should slow the process and increase costs to everyone. The small truckers are going to get hit the hardest. Many will go out of business.
I wonder if this law will apply to the Mexican truckers coming into California from Mexico.

Thanks for starting this thread Blendmaster. After reading all about this law, this pretty much sums it up: HOW STUPID. Is it really too much to ask to be able to own a 5 ton, not use it commercially, but still be able to go to the home store of your choice and get all the material for the fence you are building in 1 trip? I guess so...

...So when are the zombies going to come and save us from this ridiculousness?

CARB is working to raise the low milage exemption to 5,000 miles per year. This is good news for people with vehicles that are not old enough to be historic or do not want to go historic.

No discussion necessary. Do not discuss insurance. Read the stickies.

Got it? Or do I need to escalate the matter?

New information on Diesel registration and CARB mandates for California.
Some northern counties are fighting CARB in the courtroom. CARB is now saying they will extend the requirement for some older diesels to install the new smog equipment until 2020. This is getting interesting. The Northern California lawyers have found a loophole that might force CARB to back down on the new mandates.
