An American Deuce in Canada

I was working as assistant with a guy from the University of BC along Alaska Highway Mile 422 in 1981. After the 5 months were up, I took some vacation there with my then-girlfriend in a 25 year old Austin Westminster. Turned into a parking place along the AH one evening and saw something moving back into the woods on the other side. Took me a moment to realize it had been a small grizzly (typical color and the hump back). Did not even stopped the car to look but just pulled out again before explaining my GF why we did not stop on this gorgeous place. She did not really believe me, but in those nick of the woods, I am not taking risks.

My colleague was studying Thin Horn sheep, and he had both a tranquilizer gun and a "combination gun" (double barrel rifle over shotgun) in the truck, although we never took it on trips, too heavy. Our problem was black bears messing up our camp looking for food (including chewing on tins with beans). We once were asked to go hunt a problem bear (black bears that come too close to houses rummaging through garbage bins for food) with the tranquilizer gun so it could be moved out of the area. Unfortunately, no success.

Did eat bear and moose stew though. Very strange taste, but not bad (I prefer an angus steak or good T-Bone).

My uncle used to be a Fish and Wildlife Officer working out of Bella Bella and Bella Coola in the 60s to the mid 80s. Dream job (at least in summer): three man crew on a small patrolling boat with him as captain. His family lived in Victoria in the 80s, he just traveled there during his down-time.

Unfortunately, I only have a few paper photographs but mostly slides of that trip, so no pics to post. Have to scan and transfer the best to digital once I have time.

Great story, McDuff (sorry to digress here, The King Machine, but you're a champ for being patient with us chatter boxes "on the porch", here)!

That combination is called a Drilling isn't it? And it's actually the other way around, two shotgun barrels side-by-side over a rifle barrel.

I only know this because my old man had only one war prize from his service in WWII, and that was it, a beautiful museum-quality Drilling he confiscated off some German aristocrat because the order was no civilian guns among the occupied.

Not a gunman, so I had to look it up again, but his was a combination gun with two barrels, shotgun over riffle (I think). You are talking about a drilling gun with three barrels; two shotgun barrels next to each other and a riffle barrel in the middle underneath it.

ColdWarrior taught me this lesson:

But if I remember right, this thread:

- is about a Deuce

- in Canada,

Isn't it?!

Meh our soil is attached and therefore we're all brothers and sisters here. Love the stories- great shots King ! That looks like a great place to play...definitely more scenic than my last camp in Saskatchewan for firearms/motorcade/vehicle takedown training.

Trailer is ready for paint. The deuce is coming back into the shop for her pre-summer maintenance. Lots of plans this summer. I'll try to take more vids and pictures.

There will be no major upgrades, wheel bearings (standard), a dog bone, grease, brake shoes, Air-O-Matic servicing, and an addition of an extra air accumulator tank.

Hers a pic of the deuce in an over watch position, smoking meat is a forward operation.
