HMMWV recovery U-Haul nightmare

Got her home today after a uhaul nightmare. So long story short 3 uhaul trucks later I got her home. Started at 0600 morning of 7 dec and ended 0020 8 Dec, only a 600 mile round trip... She's still on the trailer until sun up, then I'll move her off the trailer.

Lotta truck on that trailer. What were the problems with the trucks?
Trailer was their 7500 pound version so well with in the weight limit. Trailer was no problem, trucks were the issue, first truck had a very large rip/cut in the rubber hose that connects the filler pipe to the gas tank allowing the fuel to pour out while trying to fuel up. So...changed that one for number 2, number 2 had an issue with the power steering so that was a no go, number 3 limped home with trailer in tow, it had transmission issues, very hard/very late shifting and to top it all off a blown tire on I95 here in Florida, fortunately I got her into a rest stop and waited almost 90 min for the road side assistance to show. Reason I stopped at only 3 trucks was they ran out of truck to give me,,,,Ok, uhaul had more trucks but the level of irritation was already high enough.

Friday morning here in sunny south Florida, almost ready to unload then return uhaul truck and the uhaul nightmare is over...

Picked up in Lake Butler, Florida. Iron Planet rep Larry was great, very helpful.

I had a chance to look her over this morning and was very happy with what I saw. Inspection report showed head lights not working but they did, so got 2 LED headlight, batteries look recently installed, no corrosion, clean, date codes only 1 month apart manufactured in 2013 (Hawkers), engine compartment clean except for spider webs, engine looks new, just a little corrosion on bolt heads, new looking yellow tag EESS box and temp sender, went on very short test drive this morning, shifts smooth, oil looks new (very clean), transmission fluid also looks new, (yes, I am going to change both), up coming projects, check and change gear oil in hubs and differentials, I want to start with all fresh fluids and filters, install grounding kit, give her a good bath and go from there.

Can you give me in details on how the trailer preformed? I understand that the trucks were a nightmare.

Trailer was fine but right at weight limit and size limit. Uhaul won’t rent to you if they know it’s for a Humvee.

No sway was running about 60-65 on I95. Trailer towed straight, no hopping, only issue was with trucks.

What I am wondering is how did you get another truck with the HMMWV on the trailer?? seems they would have noticed that :eek:

My trailer is not exactly a U-Haul trailer but it's made by the same company and it's pretty much the same dimensions. I own it and it is not a rental.

Towed 3 vehicles this morning with it and loaded the 2 door softtop Humvee just to see how it would perform

The humvee towed perfectly fine upto 55 mph. The trailer did not squat too much and held the truck fine. I would deflate the tires some because the truck is as wide as the fenders but it definitely does fit. You will have to utilize your own stripes to secure it. I would be perfectly fine using a U-Haul style trailer for up to a 3 or 4 hour trip without the family.

After several miles of towing I decided to accelerate briskly up to 65 and it started to sway.

No issues at or under 55 mph.

I believe it Rides so well because the engines oil pan and transmission is almost directly over the axles.

My Chevy suburban 2500 seems overloaded and will sway and the trailer at 30 or 40 mph.

The engine and transmission on the suburban sit in front of the axle.

For the love of a HumV, LOL This could be the story of the "Tail wagging the DOG" And WHO cruzes 33 MPH.

And it keeps on ticking or a ticket ?? CAMO

The way the weight is distributed on the trailer is prone to shift forward allowing the front trailer axle to take the lion's share of the load. If this happens during braking and maneuvering, it's possible that it'll begin a positive reinforcing vigorous side to side shake.

It'll likely be enough to break the hitch or drawbar if this happens at speed. It'll be sudden with almost no warning, it's really impressive when this happens. I've experienced it exactly once, with a relatively light load and a 9300lb tow vehicle. Never again...

I'm reckless and am far too prone to take chances, and I would not go down the road at highway speed as pictured.

I wouldn't worry about any of that stuff!!! Unless there were a LOT more tie downs involved the first minor upset and the HMMWV is leaving the trailer, no problem then........
