After an 8 hour day at work I came home and wanted to lighten the CUCV work load. I choose Mr. Rusty because I knew I could get it completed and on its way. I took some pictures of the rubber hose I encapsulated the glow plugs with. I filled them with dielectric grease. P1000397.JPGP1000398.JPGP1000399.JPG It helps keep the corrosion at bay. I crimped all 8 of the 3/16" spades and assured they were tight on the glow plug. I see many that barely have a connection and that makes a hot spot in the wiring further degrading the wiring harness and the connectors. I also was looking thru my desk at work and found one of the original made in USA AC Delco glow plugs from back in the day.P1000402.JPGP1000403.JPG I always use a glow plug to fit my connections. It sucks to just crimp them and struggle trying to get them reconnected under the nozzles. Mentioning nozzles. These nozzles are encrusted in rust, They as slightly wet but no drips and it runs fine. P1000401.JPGP1000400.JPG I could turn this into a space shuttle project but I know that it has a task to do and it is all serviced and ready for another year. I completed it and drove it to a local exhaust shop and am having the left muffler replaced. 5 years and the muffler is gone. Looking under this truck it is hard to imagine I done all that work 5 years ago. Bolts that a wrench will not fit on because of rust. Take Care and Be Safe.

I nver thought of rust as scary. But I tell you what.

Maybe it's because it's almost Halloween or something, but looking at that close-up pic of the rusted nut really scares me!!

Sad news and one I never heard of before on a CUCV. Mr Rusty has the left exhaust manifold rusted thru completely. It is the left side and I heard the muffler leaking so I didn't have anyway to plug the exhaust. That is a first for me. I am going to let the exhaust shop have the honors of changing it. I will just replace the one with a Genuine CUCVRUS used GM manifold. Bolts and all. I never seen that on a CUCV before. Take Care. Pictures when I get the old one back.

I have been working on the Jersey Indian M1028. It was brought here not starting and I checked the fuel flow it had fuel and pumped fuel the pump was full of fuel when I opened the top. I could not get fuel out to the nozzles. I removed the pump and sent it out for rebuilding. I installed the pump and the truck struggles to run. I bleed the air out with the glow plugs removed. It started but would not accelerate it stumbled and shut off. Hard thing was the batteries were low and I slave cabled it again. It would start and shut down. I opened the bleeder on the fuel filter and it spit air out. I usually always change a lift pump when I install a rebuilt injection pump but I have been having a great deal of trouble finding a lift pump. I tried all the big and local parts stores. No luck. I did get a moment of success with Advance and it ended up being the wrong pump. So I removed the current pump that was on the engine now. P1000407 - Copy.JPG I seen someone was messing with this pump in the past. Notice the fuel line all hacked up. Also the exterior of the pump appears wet.
I seen the bottom clamp had the line almost severed it was that overtightened. Also the return line was bent. I don't dare straighten it. It will break for sure. P1000408 - Copy.JPG I wanted to see the failure in the fuel pump so I uncrimped the bowl. Well there it is. P1000409 - Copy.JPG A lot of filth and rust came from the bowl. P1000410 - Copy.JPG P1000411 - Copy.JPGI also wanted to point out how much easier it is to change the fuel pump from the top side. All I had to remove was the Gen 2 and brackets. I am convinced that the fuel pump was loosing prime and It was hard to diagnose because it still pumped fuel while I was checking it. It was after it sat that it bled air from the bleeder. P1000412.JPG I am pretty sure the fuel pump has failed. I have a Delphi CHFP 906 on order from Summit. Hard to imagine a lift pump being hard to find. That must be part of the Green Deal. I guess I am done with that project till more parts come. Take Care and get out and Vote.

Crimps can be the Kiss of Death:

- I used to store the cords of my power tools in a loop with a tie in the middle (looking like a bow-tie).

- Undo, do, undo, do

- The fatigue would break the copper wire, and the continutiy was shot

NOW I store every power tool with the cord of each in one big loop. Lesson learned.

I'm stupid but I do make corrections.

I think I might be running into the same problem. I am getting fuel out the filter bleed port (after replacing the filter). I cracked all of the injectors and I am getting fuel from all of them. Cranks fine but will not start. It's either the lift pump or injector pump.

No good news on the fuel pump. My Wife looked up the Summit order and it shows back ordered. Not to cause an alarm but how can that be a simple 6.2 diesel lift pump hard to get. Maybe it is the fact that the imports are low at the moment and the shelves are getting empty of a lot of things. I have bought them from the GM dealer in the past. I will have to check on that as an option tomorrow. The pump I removed was a Carter. I never seen a Carter lift pump before. But upon further cleaning and examination I think this truck had several fuel related issues that compounded to make a big issue no start and no run. The Z hose at the frame did have a minute tear in it where the gorilla tightened the clamp on the pump bowl connection. That itself would have allowed air to bleed in and drop the fuel back. That is why the air at the bleeder. And the perforated diaphragm in the lift pump was probably doing its job yet but not for long. So my final diagnosis is that a simple tear/cut in the hose with no fluid leak was the root of all evil. It happens. Live and learn. When I received it I did all the visual and may have been wrong. But the work I have and will be done was inevitable. Better now then in the middle of plowing snow. Be Safe and Take Care.

I just found this one and have one ordered. I may buy everyone I see at this point. I NEVER was held up for lack of parts. A vacuum pump is another item getting very hard to find a rebuilt or new replacement. Unless I am looking at the wrong places. To all my customers and friends. get these parts now. They seem to be disappearing quickly. Maybe its a Rona thing. Good Luck. Be Safe.

Advance Auto/Carquest has them available. Part number 1510502. Have 10 at my local DC in midwest. I can check national DCs tomorrow at work although I've had plenty of availability for 6.2 and 6.5 pumps for CUCV and HMMWV applications this year. The Delphi pumps are also available at the factory yet but are much more expensive.

Let me know if you have any other parts that are hard to find. The vacuum pumps were plentiful early this year but I will see if supplies are running short now.

When it comes to a good reliable lift pump I would spend the money. Delphi has a reputable business and I see many of their products on the new GM vehicles. So saving $25. and getting a scrap import pump is not even figured into the equation. I am chancing what I get reaching out to multiple suppliers but I need this truck back in the owners driveway and out of mine. It has been here since August. Snowed this AM here. Just flurries but none the less flurries. Very windy and cold here today. Be Safe and Take Care.

Number 2 pump arrived from parts geek. Wrong one. This is the picture but the pump that arrived had the incorrect push lever. had 1/2" of free play.
Amazon pump shows out for delivery today.
Advance Auto also sent me wrong pump and got wrong pump from hub transferred to store. I have more time in looking for the pump than it takes to pull the engine.
This is the incorrect one that arrived today. Not the actual but the one I received. They said it was boxed wrong. They are sending another.
