MEP-002A, will Start, Run then dies....any suggestions?

A great degunk and lacquer remover is Chem dip. However know what you are doing because its a bit like going after a fly with a bazooka.


Last time i used it was on a 003 IP (same as the 002) and check valve. BUT the IP was completely rebuilt after. It was very clean once removed (including the paint)

This is also one of those comments with my disclaimer of use your own brain and dont rely on mine

I agree that pump timing is not the issue. It worked before, so the timing button is correct and the plunger hasn't skipped in the plunger guide because it starts up and runs fine for a while. Skipped plunger guides are difficult starting and the heads get hot quick.
I use both Acetone in the systems and Berryman's Chem dip for soaking parts ( no reason if wouldn't work internally as well )
But as Rick mentioned, Acetone straight into the injectors can be bad. After you soak everything, cycle the fuel pumps for a good long time to push everything out of the filters and pumps, back to the tank. diluting the acetone etc. with 5 gl. of diesel will take care of it.

Two question...
What "wonder fluid" would you recommend for soaking? Any fluid that will take off the diesel Lacquer. Any i would recommend, would have to be ordered from Germany. Might not be cost effective.
I see 3 check valves between the Fuel Tank and the IP, is that all of them? There is only one check valve.

Nope, not correct. Essentially #6 and #11 are both referencing the same single check valve mounted under the clamp, right next to your oil pressure gage, just the first image isn't really accurate in it's orientation.
Item #45 is just a 90* brass NPT to Flare adapter, no check valve that I have ever seen, HOWEVER, the TM's only show the Bosch PSU injection pump which was used in the beginning on some Hollingsworth machines, but quickly replaced by the Ambac M-50 found on 80%+ of these machines.
It's been a while since I've worked on a PSU ( AKA P.O.S ) injection pump, so it is possible that the PSU had a check valve and they ditched it when Ambac took it over. But on the 5 or 6 PSU's I've seen I don't recall that fitting having a check valve built in.

Ok, thanks for the info! I hate to keep mentioning the weather, but it is just nasty here, so I didn't physically look at the Gen Set to eirther confirm or deny what the TM was showing and that's why I just posted what I saw in the TM.

Yup, no worries.
Always remember, the TM's are only 99.5% accurate.
We've discovered a handful of incorrect numbers, measurements and descriptions in the TM's over the years.
Humm... sounds like a new sticky! "Generator TM errors"
That might be a fun project to take on.

The manual mistakes range throughout the entire military system. And there is even a form in the back of every manual to point out the mistakes. I think every manual has 20 plus revisions. And yet the mistakes are still there.

I once was asked to proofread a tech manual for a ride, I found several errors in the general prefave section (where all the safety info etc lives). I caused the recall of every manual the mouse wrote between 1989 and 2013

I have the mistakes that I've identified on the 802,803 wiring noted on some marked up schematic PDF's.
I recall finding an error in the 831 schematics a few years back. I didn't write it down, but I could probably find it again.

Let me see if I can put my 25 cents in,

Each Fuel Pump has a Capacitor for EMC suppression. They have the nasty habit to fail shorted or with very low resistance. They fail intermittently over time, barely ever completely at once.
We may just have one or two failing caps on the two fuel pumps for run.
Failing Capacitors also can work for a few seconds or minutes and then their internal resistance decreases and this will reduce the current available to the fuel pump, slowing fuel pump down until fuel pump stops all together.

Disconnect capacitors and see if this fixes the problem.

Note to the Innocent bystander,
Back in days when we had TV's with picture tubes and the vertical picture stabilizer capacitor went bad, then the picture would become vertically smaller over time like in the old movie films and finally you would see only a long bright stripe across the screen in the center.

I had one blow in an old tv set and it created a weird oscillation the image looked like a twisting helix. I was so upset as it happened when i had made it to a level in a video game I had never reached before.

@Scoobyshep , I am sure gald you didn't become a TV Repair Man! This would have been the Cap for the Horizontal Stabilizer, which failed completely open....
