Nope. Just think of it as a locomotive with rubber tires. Diesel engine driving a generator at more or less a constant speed (better fuel economy and emissions) which in turn charge batteries or drive electric motors. The advantage of electric motors is that they have 100% torque available as soon as you put power to them.

There is a guy with an electric car who drag races it and he positively smokes gasoline engined cars.

I think EJ Potter (Michigan Madman) did that aswell. I remember hearing about an Allison V12 powered generator on a flatbed and a gutted early toyota with small traction motors, think life size slot car!

The only difference they do not keep the generator at a constant speed they let the engine go up and down in speed as they need more power to get even better fuel efficiency but that makes the generator out put a variable frequency and voltage which is a pin in the ass for the suppliers who need to use that power supply to power there own equipment.
