So I had this crazy idea, how about this for an engine for my A3...

I would say that swapping to a motor that turns 500 RPM slower and a transmission that was made for axles with a 4.44:1 ratio, plus all the extra weight of the motor and transmission, you'd end up with a much slower truck...

Now that may be true, a wet blank, but probably true.

Break out your yard stick, a 400 is longer than you apparently think. You could do a nice crew cab conversion, move the firewall back, extend the steering column and sit in what should have been the back seat.

That would be cool, shorten the box and make a crew cab!!

Good luck finding a tire tall enough to get you there. You would have a much nicer truck and a much easier swap using the Cummins 6BT. A huge power increase, not nearly as heavy and much more rpm. Good luck in your endeavors. Be sure to post up photos of your work in progress.

About 1.5 million Dodge pickups by now, some motor homes, buses, delivery trucks, generators, fork lifts, irrigation pumps, the engine is very versatile and extremely durable. Much better option for a deuce than any other non-original engine that I am aware of.

I want to do 80 down the highway.
I coasted in neutral down a mountain to 65mph (per GPS) , it drove straight as an arrow. It also had no problem slowing down. Mine does have tires from 2004-2005. I do not recommend this, but everyone already knows that I do crazy things. I would not have done it with some of the old tires that I have seen on these trucks. I do not believe these trucks have any trouble with higher speed as long as they are unloaded, fully loaded at higher speed would definitely tax the brake system.

That video makes me want to build the first competition deuce drifter! As far a the 5.9 cummins, just remember that Ford and GM both use them in medium duty trucks, that makes 6 speed and A/C swaps much easier.

whats that paper-holder-downer of a motor that they call a cat weigh? lets say 1500 lbs., does that sound aboot right? what did the lds motor weigh? maybe a few pounds more? ok, now whats the 400 weigh? about 3000 pounds. you could make it work, but is it worth it?

hooper, you crack me up! The idea is pretty cool, but I think you can get 250 hp out of the 3116, and find yourself an RV that burned and get the five or six speed allison out of it. You'd need the computer too, but I bet you could get it to work better than what you got in mind so far, and you'd get compression braking, electronic control and push button shifting.

Then, put another one in the bed of the A3, drop the intermediary axle, connect the second motor to a front axle mounted back there with hydraulic steering, and you'd have a two engine 4wd 12 speed nightmare.

You can get the boat version 3116 in a 350hp model.

How about an iddy biddy turbine hooked up to a gear reduction and then a hydrostatic-variable vane torque converter. Spool up the engine, push the lever and away you go.......:mrgreen:

Man I don't know what's wrong with me. I just get this beautiful like new truck and the first thing I want to do is rip the engine out. Maybe I'll take your advice, it sounds much more logical...

Congrats on your new A3. Mine is a fantastic machine. It doesn't go really fast on the road, but it is near perfect off road for my purposes.
While it is true there are 350-400 hp 3116's out there, in the marine applications, the body of water they operate in also cools them down. To make horsepower you either need big displacement or big cooling with smaller displacement. F1 cars have tiny engines but they move through the air very fast. I would not want to be near the A3 going fast enough to cool down that 400 hp 3116.
if you want bigger Hp maybe look into one of the M920's that seem to be come up on auciton but good ones start at 10,000 ish. That's a 400 hp mill. 2cents :driver:
