I looked at the mirrors that came off my truck. Some rust and one of the arms is bent up pretty bad.
If you can get them from Saturn or another vendor, go for it. I'm not sure how to wrap these up for shipping. Not to mention the cost incurred.
I have a set of West Coast mirrors I took off my truck. I'll see if I can find them.
I put single arm mirrors with the square heads - Vietnam era style. makes it a little harder to see out of, but not impossible.
The Quad project has bogged down a bit due to the heat. I hope to get it back up and going shortly. The truck is at the Museum, although they moved it from under the cover where I was working on it to out in the weather. I learned I need a new wiring harness, and am waiting on that to get...
I have been thinking about restoring an M109 back to a radar van. My dad used a similar van to repair Nike missile radar sites back during the Korean War. His van was an M220. Given the shortcomings of that truck, I thought I'd try building it using an M109.
I have the info on the radar...
I was able to find out from the vets that the original radio call sign for The Widow Maker was Gladiator 23 (or 24, 25, depending on the truck number).
The "Gladiator" part comes from she was with "G" Battery, 65th Artillery.
How did Transportation units come up with their radio call signs...
Just a side note to let everybody know that I have managed to find the fellow that painted the original artwork on The Widow Maker, and he has agreed to come down and paint the artwork on the replica.
As soon as I get everything put back together, I'll post some photos.
That's a new one for me. It looks kind of like the mounts in some of the FAV's, but that would be a guess.
I'll go for the OPFOR mount. It would support a PKM or M60. Nothing bigger.
Thanks, guys. And, thanks for the pic.
That's kind of what I was thinking of in building. Maybe also going with the armored windshield.
Right now, it's still in the planning stages.
I wasn't planning on putting a .50 on it. Just an M60 or two. My experience with the .50 is that they...
I have been giving this some thought, and decided it might be kind of fun to do. After i finish The Widow Maker, of course.:-P
Anyways, I have contemplating building an armored jeep based on the M151's from Vietnam.
Anybody have any experience with these?
Thoughts? Comments?
Right...
I look forward to seeing what you do. As long as it's correct to the time, I don't see any problems with doing a tribute truck.
When I first started out with The Widow Maker, I was planning on doing a tribute truck - combining several for their features. I lucked out in that several...
I have been reconsidering attending this event. But, it's close to 2,000 miles one way! That gets expensive in a hurry.
Let me see what I can come up with on getting The Widow Maker there. I can cover the guns and the mount.
The reason for my reconsideration - I saw the spread that SUPPLY...
Rory,
Looks good. I'll look into acquiring some of those off some of the parts trucks I have been finding. If I can get any that look good, I'll let you know.
I'll bring the marshmellows for next year's roast at Temple.
Thanks for the info!
Sort of. I still don't have the mount installed. I'm hoping to get the truck painted this week-end.
I have been trying to get all the little details taken care of before I tackle larger ones.
I did get the headlights "flipped." Thanks goes out to several folks with the Museum. They...
Thanks for all the input. The vets I spoke with about the truck told me they didn't have any mounts on the inside to carry weapons. And, as I am trying to build an exact copy of the real truck, I have to follow what they tell me.
So, I'll just have to find a place near the radio to put...
Okay, here's a new question for the Gun Truck crowd: how do you secure auxiliary weapons on or in the truck? These would include personal weapons for the crew, not the main armaments (.50's, M60's, etc.).
I am looking for a way to carry my AirSoft M79 in the cab where it is visible during a...
Thanks for the info. And on that note, I'll have to bow out of attending in California. I'm not putting little orange plugs in the ends of my guns.
And, gun trucks tend to attract attention. Not that I do anything stupid - I just don't want any issues being made 1,000 miles from my home state.
