Well, if he turned the brake adjuster bolts he probably caused that hub to have excessive clearance between the the brake shoe and drum.

Your logic is sound, I did the same thing to my 86 1009. I found a 14 bolt rear with 3:73 gears and a Dana 44 front with 3:73 gears. Could not be happier with the conversion. And like Kenny said, unless your doing serious wheeling, especially with a 1009, you don't need a 60 up front. If...

3:73's, 4:10's = Higher RPM = crappier mileage. I have a 14 bolt with 3:73's in my 1009 I get about 13-14 MPG @ 70 mph 2cents
