Thanks Suprman. Very helpful info.
My wife and I jacked up the front axle and put it on jack stands today to pull some weight off the leaking tire. I haven't pulled the wheel off yet, but I got a better look at the offending valve stem. I haven't pulled one of these apart before, but it...
We’ve made some good progress the last few days. With the help of a friend and a forklift, we pulled the bed off. It went pretty well. Right now the bed is sitting outside next to the hanger, so hopefully no one at the airport fusses at us about it being there while we find someone that wants...
That's a pretty sweet truck! That's basically what we are planning to build, but ours will probably be a little smaller. We haven't decided if we will leave the spare tire behind the cab, or relocate it and move the camper volume forward on the right side like that one. Did it still have the...
It was a private acquisition. We looked at auction vehicles for a while, but this one was in nice shape, so we just went for it. We're pretty happy with it.
My wife and I got the bed disconnected from the frame today. An abrasive cut-off disk made easy work of the huck bolts. They were...
Our new M1078 showed up yesterday morning. We've only driven it around the hanger at our local airport, but it's in good functional shape. Just a few little squawks so far: Passenger side front tire loses air, cab rubs on coolant tank a little, air drier is loose on it's mount, bolt is broken...
Actually, there have been a few Steyr imported into the US. I drove in a Steyr 12M18 from Oregon once. I liked the stick shift transmission. In many ways I liked it more than a M1078, but they are like $30k in surplus condition. I looked into it and it's basically impossible to register them...
Congrats on your new truck!
I actually just pulled the driver alarm switch off my truck tonight. I'll be removing the bed shortly, so I likely don't need the cable. Let me take a look at how it connects in to the cab.

I've designed a lot of aircraft systems that use MIL-H-5606 (or MIL-PRF-5606H). It's often called "red fluid" in aviation. I've used it a lot. It's pretty good stuff. It shouldn't be hard to find at all.

I've been looking at a lot of M1078 lately searching for the best one to go after.
I'm considering several, but I had a question on the data plate on one of them. They have all had stamped text on the data plates up to this point, but this one has hand engraved text on it instead of stamped...
So, I've been spending time hunting for a reasonable M1078 to purchase. I was looking at one today, and I noticed that it had a CARC date stamp on the driver-side door frame. I assume this is referring to CARC paint, but I was curious about the date. The data plate on the dash showed a...
My wife and I went down and visited Eric (Duckworthe) in San Diego. He is a super nice guy and very helpful. His camper and truck are great. My wife and I really liked his overall setup. He took us for a drive (paved and trail), and we were really impressed with how comfortable the ride was...
The Expedition Portal is awesome. I'm a member there already. Thanks for the reference, though. There is a lot of really good info on there.
We've reviewed a ton of truck options, and I think we are getting pretty settled on the M1078, but we are open to ideas. I'll take a look at the...
coachgeo,
I think there are a ton of awesome options out there. My wife and I have been looking at a bunch of photos of other expedition campers. Like you said, I don't want it too tall, but I'm 6'2", so I would like a little space.
I was thinking of making recessed storage in the floor...
Thank you very much for taking the time to get those dimensions. That is very helpful.
The "floor-plan" I sketched up is:
Wide: 6' 5"
Length:13"
Height: 6' 5"
Surprisingly close. I would gladly give up a foot of length to get a foot of width, so that's actually good.
Have a good weekend...
Hey Tom,
Thanks for the info. I too have never driven something with air brakes, so I think that would take some learning and getting use to. I'm a pretty slow driver in general, so driving slow is fine with me as long as I'm not causing traffic problems or stressing people out. I do...
