What are things to look for in a engine to rebuild ?

Depending on how far into a complete rebuild you get, it might be cheaper to get one out of a can. Check the classifieds...

    Rattle can paint advice

For rattle cans, go by the paint store and pick up some finger clips. They clip onto the can and are alot easier than mashing the button down with your index finger. Good Luck and pot your exploits!

Any police issues with driving an unregistered 5 tonner from base?

There have been countless threads concerning this, might not be the route you are taking, but will give you a better insight. I do not believe you will have a problem IF you have insurance for the trip. *Most* states allow you to recover and register within 30+/- days. That being said, do you...

    just turned 100k, now what??

:ditto: But I have seen several that have come close! Seriously, do check the Kanuter valve. It's the valve that keeps positive pressure (0.5PSI) between the inner and outer sheet metal to keep it from rusting away. If the valve fails, your sheet metal will rust out.

    M35a2 tires

You could go with the goodyear g177 in 1100x20 left in the back and 14.50x20 in the front also. Nice mean looking on front and you would still have 4 'spares' should something go wrong... Anything larger in diameter, you will be shifting to 4th at the hint of a hill...

    Differential ratio Poll

Well, I would have gone the 700R4 or the 4L80e but want NO electronics at all and do not want to move the engine fore or aft. The TH400 and the 4.10 should be as bullet proof as I want it and like I said before, no electronics... Thanks for the input though.

So my wife is a bit mad at me....

That's not too bad...I bid and won a M1008 AND a Deuce. Just before my chief and I left to pick them up, I told the wife that we were going to pick up the trucks, and one of them was a BIG truck. All she said was 'OK honey, no problem'! I told her again and that she might not be happy, she again...

    Differential ratio Poll

Thanks for all the replys! Well, after looking over everything, I bit the bullet and changed out the gears to 4.10. It still has the guts to tow good and seems to have really good RPMs at 60. Spent about 1800 on all the innards, seals, gears, and such. (The price should be the same for 3.73). I...
