    Air tool oil is the best thing here. In fact part of the maintenance on these is to open the plug on the back of the airpack and squirt a small amount if oil inside. The air tool oil is compatible with rubber and o rings.

    Inside is a big spring that returns and keeps the plate assembly back. In the past once I got the bolts off that spring pushed the shell off. Not sure what is causing yours to be stuck. Maybe the seal is really stuck or rusted?

    Okay I have been searching and can't find it. Awhile back I saw a post where someone found a new made power plunger for the Holley carbs that was resistant to Ethanol. The picture of it showed that the seal that normally is leather was a purple color. I might have been a part that also...

    Be careful with that air hose from the air cleaner. Those when old can be fragile.

    Oh and WD40 is not a very good penetrating oil.

    It's negative ground. I also took the carburetor off and cleaned it and found dirt dabbler mud nests on the throttle plate. That would have been really bad for the engine. If you run a wire to the starter you can use the start lever to start it.

    Even before I turn the engine I take the plugs out and put penetrating oil in the cylinders and let them sit for a few days spraying more in there every now and then. Then turn it by hand with the plugs out and see how easy it is to turn or if it binds. I disconnect the fuel pump and get a...

    You might find another dedicated G749'er that would want your engine and transmission for parts or a spare. Heck I would take them and store them just in case. But these are heavy buggers and distance is the killer in dealings like this. Alan

    I had problems with Home Depot finding FS 34079 as well. I think that FS number was discontinued years ago. What we did was he looked up FS 24079 which he was able to find and then just use a flat base. Looks good to me. Here are the color examples.
